Educating Hearts & Minds for a More Compassionate World
When we extend compassion, we know it benefits others, but did you know that cultivating compassion also benefits the one feeling and extending it? The University of Arizona’s Center for Compassion Studies, in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences is investigating how qualities such as kindness, altruism, mindfulness, forgiveness and compassion impact our lives at every level. In addition to researching these impacts, we’re also integrating mindfulness, compassion training, and other strategies that support our ability to receive, extend and cultivate self-care in academic and community settings. Join us to learn more about how the cultivation of these qualities supports our well-being as individuals, and a society.

Her “Excellency” President ELLIE PATTERSON began her 4th meeting with Justin Williams, PAULINE HECHLER and ROBIN STODDARD (aka Spidy) by her side.  It was DAVE WHITE’S and ROBIN’S birthday.  ROBIN thanked everyone for supporting his “Wright Flight” flying program and he even read a note from a Sunnyside School Principal that told about how inspirational Wright Flight was to her pupils.  Great job ROBIN!  Yeah Wright Flight!!!!

DAVE WHITE said that he would ride in the 100 mile version of the El Tour and sponsor his own ride.  Good luck DAVE, we’ll prepare a stretcher just in case…

GARY HIRSCH, the “Piano Man” played “America the Beautiful” for MARCIA KRUMWIEDE and the club.  Many thanks to Darrell’s 1-800-Flowers, Harlow Gardens, Larry H. Miller, Restaurant.com and Road House Cinemas for our raffle prizes.  We had a great raffle sale thanks to SAA FONDA INSLEY and her ticket selling team.

PRESIDENT ELLIE noticed CHARLOTTE HARRIS for her Rotary International “Service Above Self” award in the “Rotarian”.  CAM MOORE donated a scanner program to our Rotary office – thank you CAM!  JO DECHATELET gave credit to MARGARET HIGGINS from “The Haven”.  DAVE GALLAHER and MIKE ORCUTT shouted out for the Boy Scout Camp work day.  BOB SHAFF gave a nice introduction for LENN DITMANSON receiving his blue badge, with a nice ovation from the membership.  And, JOHN LEWIS announced our first “ELLIE Presidency” Mixer on August 31, 2016.

Our program was Founder & CEO of Startup Tucson, Justin Williams.  Boy, do we need this guy in Tucson.  Justin teaches people how to embrace failure.  He personally knows every .com startup west of the Mississippi.  He wants the intellectual property developed in Tucson to stay in Tucson.  He wants the poor and disadvantaged to become computer literate and to develop their talents right here in our home town.  We can become the next Silicon Valley or Austin, Texas if we can begin to develop our talent right here in town.  Right now, 80% of our UofA graduates leave town to develop their ideas.  This is a man that our club needs to stay in touch with.  He could turn around some of the economic thinking about how our town could grow and thrive.  Great presentation Justin!

The meeting was closed by PRESIDENT ELLIE with a quote from Will Rogers about standing still and getting run over.
President's Letter
We’ve made it through the RNC and the DNC and perhaps now it’s time to sip a bold red or an Amber blonde and regroup as we fact-check the recent speeches of both conventions.   We’ve heard the rhetoric on both sides and we’re certainly living in conflicting times where politics are not usual or are they? What is the truth? What are the facts? But there’s good news and that’s what Rotary respects.

Rotary is, and always has been, non-partisan and nonsectarian and the Four Way test, created by Herbert J. Taylor in 1932 was designed to be the code of ethics for personal and professional relationships. Taylor rescued a corporation from bankruptcy and the survival of the company is credit to this simple philosophy. Rotary adopted the Four Way test in 1943 and it has been translated in more than a hundred languages. The first of the Four Way test states “Is it the truth?”

Truth, unity, service, humility, fairness, goodwill and peace define Rotarians in 35,000 clubs around the world in over 200 countries. As we head into the 14-week long road to November, the fourth principle under the “Object of Rotary’s” statement of common purpose and direction also comes to mind along with the Four Way test:  “The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.” This principle and the three other guiding principles of Rotary have been developed over the years to provide Rotarians with a strong, common purpose and direction. They serve as a foundation for our relationships with each other and the action we take in the world. They held true then and they hold true now.
That is the truth.
