Stories
U of A Gem and Mineral Museum
As a land-grant institution, the University of Arizona is committed to providing quality education, research and outreach to the citizens of the State of Arizona. The UA Gem & Mineral Museum, belonging to the Department of Geosciences, reflects the mission of the university. The University of Arizona Gem and Mineral Museum is committed to supporting the study of minerals and advancing the knowledge of mineralogy through the quality and scope of its mineral collection and exhibits, by fostering an appreciation for the mineralogical wonders of Earth and our solar system, while serving the needs of K-20 students, faculty and the general public.

Eric Fritz ~ Biography

Eric Fritz, FGA, DGA is the manager of The University of Arizona Gem and Mineral Museum.  The current role is to develop and transition the existing museum to the historic Pima County Courthouse facility.  Eric will interface with the University, Pima County and the architects to build a world class facility for the collections as well as a research arm for mineralogy and gemology research .

Prior to this role, he was Manager-North America for Gem-A, the Gemmological Association of Great Britain, holding both colored stone and diamond designations.   Lab instruction, seminars and workshops are provided to students and the gem and jewelry industry.  Eric has a degree in Zoology from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.  The Zoology degree leads to a passion for pearls and other organic gem materials, which are Eric’s specialty.    As a youth, He collected shells on the seashore and noticed at an early age the ability for pearl formation as a free pearl or as a protrusion of the shell, what we now refer to as Mabe or blister pearls.  An obsessive shell collection now resides beside the minerals and gemstones.
Mystery Editor ~ 12/4/19
The meeting was called to order by President BOB a couple of minutes early to accommodate our jam-packed schedule.

JIM WOOD led the pledge and song, accompanied by STU GOLDMAN. JIM made a joke about the ASU win over the U of A, with a President BOB ASU comeback after the singing and playing got a bit off sync.  Our inspiration was the origin of Secret Santa.

MATT BLAIR introduced a recognition video for Harlow Gardens and their 80 years of being in business. With the fine starting at $2000, BILL HARLOW successfully negotiated that down to $200, proving his successful business acumen.

MARCY EULER introduced our Pima Community College honored guests. We were fortunate to have 10 PCC administrators and one board member, all sitting at different tables. Pima Community College sponsored our lunch, and Honorary Member, LEE LAMBERT, the Chancellor of Pima was our speaker. He gave a compelling speech about the future of work and learning and how Pima has refocused to be a workforce solution for Pima County and the greater Arizona area. Many interesting programs that are presently in place and are planned were introduced to the club.  President BOB had MR. LAMBERT sign the book “The Sad Little Fact” for our Make Way for Books library.

WOCKY REDSAR-WIERZBINSKI, DAN GUARE, RON BUSH and JEANNE FLOWER’S birthdays were all remembered. RON BUSH did double duty at the podium, as he also received his Blue Badge from STEVE PICKERING.

Announcements included this weekend’s Salvation Army Bell Ringing, with pleas for additional participants. ROGER HARWELL spoke about the upcoming 4th Avenue Street Fair beer booth to help our scholarship students.

Past District Governor KIRK REED described RCOT as a GREAT Rotary Club and said we represent the three Rotary tenants of Dream Big, Have Fun and Get Stuff Done. He then presented RCOT with FIVE awards for Club Service, Community Service, International Service, Youth and Literacy Awards.

JENNIFER HOFFMAN did a great introduction of our President Nominee for our Centennial Year, MARK IRVIN! MARK also recently received Man of the Year honors. We look forward to MARK leading us through our Centennial year.

President BOB’s closing quote: “You can’t spell challenge without change. If you’re going to rise to the challenge, you have to be prepared to change.” President BOB then adjourned the meeting.
RCOT Foundation Legacy Society

ROTARY CLUB OF TUCSON FOUNDATION LEGACY SOCIETY

At this week's meeting we are honoring the first 17 members of the Rotary Club of Tucson Foundation Legacy Society.  An individual becomes a member in one of three ways: 1) an outright gift of $10,000 or more; 2) a gift of $10,000 or more over 10 years or less; or 3) a provision for giving $10,000 or more in their estate plan.  If any one of these three donations is $20,000 or more, the donor may invite their spouse to be a member with them.  All three of these ways of becoming a member have been used by the individuals we are honoring today.  Thanks to the Planned Giving Committee and to all the members of our Club who have made this Legacy Society a reality.
