Despite the threat of bad weather, the 2015 Tucson Classics Car Show went on without a hitch, thanks to the many, many hours of dedication and hard work from the Rotary Club of Tucson members and volunteers.  Great job and enormous thanks to Chairman, Roger Harwell and those that played leading roles to make this year's car show another huge success!  Remember, NINER IS FINER!

SHAKING THAT FINE REPUTATION WE HAVE

That’s not “fine” as in “quality.” It’s “fine” as in “imposed monetary penalty.” Although the bad rap is fading, you will still run into some who aren’t familiar with Rotary and learn that their belief is the organization is defined as much by fines that are levied as it is by the good work it does. While it’s a myth that fining is a fundamental or major part of Rotary’s existence, there is an overblown history that supports the misunderstanding, and there admittedly remain, to this day, fines that nearly all agree are justified.

Let’s be fair: Rotary fines have historically been less about punishment than they have been about generating funds to support service. Most “fines” were inflicted on those who had a recent, positive occurrence in life. In present day Rotary, these sometimes substantial fines are arranged with the “violator” prior to imposition. While fines for trivial infractions (like not wearing western wear on Rodeo Day) haven’t completely disappeared, those are typically nominal and enforced only by the 4-Way Test – no one checks off your name as the dollar drops from your hand.

So what are those justified fines that are still in play? The cell phone that rings during the meeting is the nearly-indisputable example. And that traditional fining event is made known to even the newest members during information sessions and STAR meetings. Behavior known to be fine worthy can scarcely be classified as not pre-arranged – you are asking for it when you pilfer a fellow member’s birthday dessert. That counts as justified, if not unexpected.

A relatively recent Rotary movement is to encourage recognition of positive happenings in a member’s life, to take the place of fining. You may have already seen this in our club as a member offers a donation to celebrate good fortune, rather than waiting to be sanctioned by the President or Sergeant. Our Happy Jackson opportunities stand in for what once would have been fines. Underscoring that there is more to this than mere semantics, some Rotary clubs have seen non-offending members offering a contribution in honor of someone's child/grandchild birth or the opening of a new business operation. These self-imposed fines are a perfect denial to lingering misconceptions about an alleged disincentive to join Rotary.

Keep your cell phone on vibrate at meetings and you’ll likely never be surprised by a monetary penalty that exhausts your coffee budget for the month. Help Rotary finish off the vestiges of that fine reputation by offering a contribution when you make an announcement to be proud of. Better yet, set an example of recognizing the other member’s accomplishment via a small voluntary donation. You might be pleased to see how many others follow your lead.

Rotarian Gordon Graham to Receive the Purdue Boilermaker Pride Award

Rotary moments seem to always abound during the Classics Car Show. I became aware that our Rotarian Gordon Graham is receiving the Purdue Boilermaker Pride Award. I did know that Gordon was born in the same South Bend hospital in which I staffed for years, that he played for John Wooden at South Bend Central High School, and that he is one of our five RCoT members who served in World War II.  I am impressed that Nancy and Gordon made it to their 9th Sunday morning TCCS cleanup.  All of this make Gordon’s Purdue Boilermaker Pride Award pretty special to me.  Gordon will be back in Lafayette for Homecoming and will be just one of two Purdue alumni to receive the 2015 award.  The following is President of Purdue Alumni Club Southern Arizona, Greg Szabo’s, nomination statement for Gordon:

Gordon Jackson Graham enrolled in an advanced program at Purdue in 1942 for students who joined the United States Army before their high school graduation. He was called to active duty in 1943 and served our country in the South Pacific during World War II. He returned to Purdue following his discharge in 1946 and helped form his Fraternity Phi Kappa Tau serving in capacities from house manager to president and as an adviser. While at Purdue he joined Glenn Sample on WBAA radio for a daily noon show "Farm News and Markets". Gordon also developed and produced "Farms and Farming" a half hour show aired twice a week. Additionally, he was a member of the Purdue Zouves precision rifle team. Gordon earned a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture in 1948. Gordon was then appointed inaugural Executive Secretary of Purdue Ag Alumni Association. In that capacity he helped organize alumni relations, recruit students, promote scholarships and organize the annual Purdue Ag Alumni Fish Fry for alumni and students returning to Purdue. He also started the Purdue Ag News Magazine as he earned his Masters Degree. Gordon was married to Nancy Bagott in 1969. She and Gordon are the proud parents of Bonnie Jean Van Gorder and Suzi Cook. In the early 1970's Gordon teamed up with Purdue Alumni Board Members and Associates to form the Purdue Alumni Club of Southern Az. He served as de fact o president of the club until a constitution was drafted. To this day Gordon continues to demonstrate exceptional Boilermaker Pride as he serves on the club's Board of Directors. He is one of the club's most active members helping with College Fairs, Award Ceremonies, and making consistent contributions to the Scholarship Fund. Last but not least he and a former classmate have established the Gordon Graham/Wayne Rothgeb Scholarship in the Purdue University College of Agriculture. Gordon Graham is a model Boilermaker. It is with complete pride and honor that I nominate him for the 2015 Purdue Boilermaker Pride Award.

The Rotary Club of Tucson is certainly honored and proud of our Rotarian, Gordon Graham.
