We are getting ready for our 15th anniversary of our Tucson Classics Car Show in our Centennial year of our club! The Rotary Club of Tucson has raised nearly $1.8M to support local charities focused on literacy, education, development of job skills, and senior assistance. This year, like last year, we are supporting Pima JTED, and 100% of our proceeds will go towards meeting our commitment of $250K.
Our signature event will hopefully host close to 20,000 attendees, feature a field of 400 fabulous classic cars, includes lots of good things to eat and drink, and will feature a wrap up raffle for a gorgeous 2021 Corvette Stingray and five other amazing prizes. With only ten days to go, we are excited to share all of the plans and hard work that will come to fruition on Saturday, October 16th at 10 am on The Gregory School field. Come to hear all of the opportunities to be a vital part of this fun event that include setting up the field on Friday, the 15th, the Friday Night Dinner which includes the car show auction, the fun and fabulous day of show, and the camaraderie of the clean up on Sunday morning. Please come to hear from your team leaders to learn all you need to know!
Joni Condit is the 2021 Car Show Chair and is a Past President (2011-2012) and a thirty year member of the Club. Joni is the President and CEO of La Posada at Park Centre in Sahuarita.
Everyone had a wonderful time last Wednesday evening at our Replacement/Social Mixer at Prep & Pastry. A huge thank you to Dan Kalm for arranging this fun night of good food and fellowship!
Rotary Club of Tucson members did an awesome job this year of cleaning up the grounds of The Gregory School and our parking lots, entrances and exits to the Show. Following a near record Monsoon season, we faced taller grass, tree growth and damage and more weeds than we have seen in 14 years.
We put out the call and the Club responded, many thanks to all! We had 14 members turn out on September 18th and this Saturday 10/2, we had 21 members and family that helped us wrap-up our clean-up projects. Over 140 work hours went into the site prep this year.
Members of all ages and longevity in Rotary turned out! From Past Presidents Bill Harlow and Hugh Thompson to new members Mitch Pisik, our newest (and not quite even a member) John Harned, who just left the Navy and moved to Tucson with his wife who is a pilot stationed at DM and returning member John Duval they all did a great job!
Members that turned out for the work parties, many of them for both, include: Bill Harlow, Steve Pickering, Mitch Pisik, Mark Irvin, Diana Cannon, Curt Cannon, Lee Olitzky, Jason Grabosch, Bobby Larson, John Duval, Dave Gallaher, Chuck Sawyer, Pat Patton, Rob LaMaster, Paul Hallums, Gary Olsen, Bill Mesch, Chuck Freitas, Roger Harwell, Mike Schulte, Pat Zumbusch, Mark Clark, John Harned, Khris Dodge and Hugh Thompson.
Coffee & doughnuts (thanks Lee) started the day, followed by banter, camaraderie but mostly a lot of hard work contributed by the whole work team. Everyone went home with the good feeling (and a few sore muscles) that we got a lot done. And as we have learned from our prior years, if we are going to keep ourpromise to the Schoolof leaving it in better condition than before the show started, beginning with improving the grounds before the show…goes a long way to making this a reality!
In closing I would be remiss not to give a Rock Star shout out to Diana Canon and her husband Curt. Diana contributed much and wields a mean Weed Whacker. Curt brought his own mower and worked the tractor we rented to really go above and beyond expectations. I and the team leaders (especially Chuck Freitas) send thanks to all.
It is that time of year again, where Jon Wang will be displaying a full selection of Rotary Service Shirts at the next two meetings, October 6th and 13th.
The TCCS Friday Night Dinner will take place at The Gregory School on October 15th - 5:00 p.m. 7:30 p.m. Please sign up along with your guests on the club website home page - www.tucsonrotary.org under Upcoming Events on the left hand side. No payment at sign up; your member account will be billed $15 per person. Thank you!
We welcome President Mark "Irv" Irvin's challenge to fellow Rotarians to match funds for our club's use in supporting both our Club's international and local efforts. These pledges are for the 2021/22 Rotary year and donations will go to your favorite Rotary programs, i.e. Paul Harris, Scholarships, the Tucson Classics Car Show. If you are interested in supporting President Mark in his efforts, forms are available on the home page of our website under the RCOT Member Area drop down menu or at the registration table at our lunch meetings. Thank you.
