Well, as many of the past presidents can attest, time flies when you are having fun, and the end of my year has really snuck up on me. It has been MY privilege and MY honor to serve as your president for, in my ever so humble opinion, the best Rotary Club ever. You truly are a REMARKABLE club! I honestly do not want this to end as I have had so much fun laughing and working with you at our meetings and numerous activities - just holding fast to the rudder as you all go about your business of making our community and the people of Tucson better.
I want to especially thank our Executive Director, Dorinna York, and our Assistant ED, Kari Meger, for doing such excellent work and keeping me in line all year. I also owe thanks to our Board of Directors and our Programs Committee Co-Chairs, Ellen Wheeler and Jeff Ronstadt, for great mutual support and jobs well-done.
As you may recall way back in July of last year, I had three goals for this year – to build diversity, strengthen connections, and make Tucson better. You helped me reach these goals with your hard work and dedication, and Chuck Sawyer will continue to build on these themes.
Some of what you have accomplished and highlights this year include:
An Exce11ent 11th Car Show thanks to Car Show Chair Jim Murphy, the SLT, the TLT, and all our volunteers. We again raised over $200K for our charities!
RI President Ian Riseley asked all Rotarians to plant a tree during his tenure. With our partner Tucson Clean and Beautiful, throughout the year we planted over 250 trees in the Garden District neighborhood, at TMC, and at Udall Park.We will finish our tree project in July with the dedication of the Don Shropshire Memorial at TMC.
March Madness brought our current membership over 240 with good signs of continuing to ripple over to next year.We have many new and diverse members!
You have donated over $42K for the Annual Fund this year, and perhaps with monies still coming in, we will reach our goal (and DG Joe’s goal) of $48K for our club.
You have also continued to give generously to Polio Plus. In fact, combined giving to the Annual Fund and Polio Plus is the highest it has been in the last 15 years! Thank you!
We became partners with the Catalina Club and the Navajoa Sonora Club for an international project in Alamos, Sonora. Our club donated $10K to the project, and it will provide an opportunity for us to travel south and assist with the establishment of medical facilities and training in Alamos.
We also donated $3.5K to ShelterBox for their efforts in Guatemala, $3K to the Kenya Water Project, and $1K to the Vietnam Health Improvement Project.
Our local projects included two Red Cross blood drives, painting and landscaping for the National Alliance on Mental Health, painting and sanding at the Arizona Theatre Company, Suds for Scholars, United Way Fire Alarm Installation, Salvation Army Bell Ringing (over $4.9K raised), packing food boxes at the Community Food Bank, and landscaping and painting at the Triangle Y Camp.
We sponsored eight students to attend RYLA.We donated monies for Rotaract and Interact students to attend the District Conference.
We had numerous social gatherings at Trident II, a Home Hospitality, a Rotary Club of Tucson Night with the Tucson Roadrunners, and several 5th Wednesday Meetings at various locations throughout town. Our 5th Wednesday meeting at GAP Ministries was one of my many highlights of the year!
Programs for our meetings included Adia Barnes, Robert Robbins, José Luis Gomez, Colonel Scott Campbell and Colonel Kim Campbell, Lt Gen Mark Kelly, Sheriff Mark Napier, Paul Cicala, DG Joe Hentges, and Shirley Grace. Some of our own Rotarians were also guest speakers including Kent Laughbaum, Liz Baker, Dave Gallaher, Mike Peller, and Jenny Volpe.
We will miss our good friends and fellow Rotarians Joe Nevin and Sonny Solot.
I pray for the continued good health and happiness for all of you. Please make sure to join me at our Change of Administration Party on 7 July to usher in our new president Chuck Sawyer. I am really looking forward to Chuck’s year! Again, thank you for all these great memories and for all you do for our club and for Tucson!
