The speaker, Chuck Tampio examines some of Washington's most significant monuments as works of art that contain ideals and values intrinsic to the American experience. He thought it would be appropriate in light of the fact that the May 24 talk is only a few days before Memorial Day, a good time for reflection on those who have sacrificed so much to preserve our liberty.
Biography
Chuck Tampio started his career in education as a Peace Corps Volunteer as part of the first wave in the early 60's. He taught at several universities including a year as a visiting professor at the University of Parma, in Italy. He served as chief of staff to the commissioner of education in Rhode Island in the 70's and then worked for 25 years as VP of the Close Up Foundation where they conducted study programs on American government for more than 250,000 students and teachers from throughout the world. He was the first anchor for C--SPAN and interviewed hundreds of members of the Reagan, Bush and Clinton administrations and members of Congress. After the fall of the Soviet Union in 1989, he made a number of trips to former Soviet countries where he designed curriculum materials and taught former communist teachers on education for democracy.
Chuck has designed and conducted non-partisan week long study programs for teachers for the last 9 presidential inaugurations in Washington, DC.
Today, he has retired on a small ranch on the east side where he leads desert tours on horseback and environmental tours with off road jeeps. He is a docent at the University of Arizona Museum of Art and the Tucson Museum of Art where he has developed a number of multi-media art talks and has presented them throughout the country and in Italy.
Our RCOT mid-week meeting began with PRESIDENT ELLIE devoting a Moment of Silence to PP DAVE GALLAHER’S brother, John Patrick Gallaher, 49 years of age. Also, ALLYN BULZOMI’S Mother-in-Law passed on. The club offers our love and condolences to the Gallaher and Bulzomi families.
The Inspiration was given by RABBI STEPHANIE AARON. Rabbi spoke of her trip to Europe and visiting the holocaust sites. She mentioned a man named Sam Levinson, who spoke about the source of all the light and the best 5 four letter words; help, give, care, feel and love.
Pledge & Song were played and sung by GARY HIRSCH and ANN PLIMPTON, respectfully. The song was ‘God Bless America”. JEFF RONSTADT introduced the Visiting Rotarians and Guests.
Our one minute each Happy Birthday time was clearly violated by PRESIDENT NOMINEE CHUCK SAWYER – “Cartridge World” – Go CHUCK! The other birthdays were KEN TUCKER – Boy Scouts Catalina Council and KRISTEN WENDLER – Mesch, Clark and Rothschild, P.C.
BOB LOGAN presented three Paul Harris Fellows to PAULINE HECHLER, we are going to miss you BIG time, PAULINE. (She is now the “Little Old Lady from Pasadena” – aka Beach Boys Chick). And, also presented Paul Harris Fellows to her two daughters, Phoebe King Fox and Anne King Schodde.
SAA FONDA INSLEY came back after her business trip to introduce the Announcements.
JOE NEVIN presented CARL MAES – AXA Advisory, his blue badge. Congratulations CARL!
LISA FOGLE announced the May 31st social/replacement mixer at Jackson’s Bar & Eatery located at Bear Canyon Rd. and Tanque Verde. Be there or be square!
STEVE PICKERING, 2016 Car Show Chair, gave a $5,000 check to the Principal and Corporate Honorary Member, JULIE SHERRILL, of The Gregory School. She informed us 38 seniors will graduate this year.
BRUCE TUNZE introduced Lee Dueringer, President of the Rotary Vocational Fund – TRVFA Foundation. Our club gave this foundation $12,000 last year.

JULIE PAULSON of Waddell & Reed, introduced our program, Allan J. Hamilton, MD, a Neurology professor. His program “The Pirates of Creation: Navigating the High Seas in Search of Innovation” was the subject. And, navigating the sailing seas we did – Dr. Hamilton offered many thought provoking ideas about how our brains are affected by imitation and language. Subconsciously, we actually steal our ideas from each other through social learning and mutation of ideas. Innovation is critical to survival. The CT scanner was actually a creation of two different ideas – one, a guy working on a radar project and two, a guy developing a radiation barrier/converter project – who knew!! The Professor closed with two quotes. 1) “profit is the Kryptonite of Creativity” and, 2) the myth of Prometheus, “He stole fire from the Gods and gave it to mankind.”
The toast by PRESIDENT ELLIE was a quote from Bill Gates – “We are just getting started with our innovations”.
Ann Plimpton was born in Chicago, Illinois and spent her childhood in American Fork, Utah. After graduating from American Fork High School, Ann won a Rotary Scholarship to Wellesley College where she studied biology and passed her PhD exams in Immunology Virology Cellular Biology and Genetics. It was also during this time that she met her husband, Conrad.
As the mother of seven children, two of whom were severely mentally handicapped, Ann has dedicated much of her life volunteering for non-profit programs focused on child health and education.
In her mid-thirties, Ann was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, an autoimmune neurodegenerative disease. Despite the progressive nature of the disease, she has maintained relatively stable health and has remained active in numerous organizations including Women of the Word Northminster Presbyterian Church, the Order of the Daughters of the King at St. Phillip’s in the Hills Episcopal Church, and the Arts Council of Princeton, New Jersey, where she was the former treasurer. Currently, Ann serves as a major shareholder in INOLEX, a beauty care ingredients manufacturer in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
A new family member of our club since February, Ann shares she supports Rotary programs because, “I appreciate supporting people who volunteer their time for health and education programs. For this reason in particular, I have been eternally grateful to the Rotary Club and those who are passionate about advancing these causes.” Please say hello to Ann when you see her and welcome her as our newest family member.
Assistant Governor Ann Huber was a guest at the meeting. She stated the visit is part of her duties to monitor the progress of the clubs in her district. Ann wanted all the board to understand that the better part of her duties is to assist her clubs in meeting their goals and to be a conduit for club needs to the District Governor. Ann is proud of our club and enjoys the fun and welcoming she receives each time she visits. She stated the Rotary Club of Tucson is one of only four clubs in the district that has met the requirements for the Presidential Citation for 2016-17. Ann also wanted our club to be aware of Joe Hentges' installation as the 5500 District Governor that will take place at the Highlands at Dove Mountain on June 25th.
Glenn Ewing, club Treasurer, presented the club's current financials. The club is meeting our financial obligations under budget and the balance sheet is strong. Glenn also presented the proposed budget for 2017-2018. After discussions, the budget was approved by the board. Highlights of the budget include a cost-of-living increase in pay for the Executive Director and the Administrative Assistant, an inflationary increase of 3% to the Doubletree, a $1 increase in district dues, and a $3 increase in international dues. However, our club will be able to meet these obligations with no increase in club dues mostly due to membership growth. Also, Dorinna and Glenn have done a fantastic job the last few years in improving the financial efficiencies of club operations.
Dorinna stated as part of the ED Report that club membership will most likely see an increase of 8-10 members by the end of the year.
Bruce Tunze reported on a potential international project in cooperation with the Oro Valley Club, the Denia Club in Spain, and the Ngaoundéré Hossere Club in Cameroon to provide funds and assistance to drill a well, provide beds, and install a solar electric system for the Foubarka-Mbé leprosarium in the Adamawa region of Cameroon.
We had a great time at the Community Food Bank on Saturday. Eighteen Rotarians, scholarship students, and Mayor Rothschild spent two and a half hours putting together food boxes for the Food Bank's 'Food Plus' program. This program delivers food boxes once a month to seniors in need. We put together 842 boxes with over 25,000 pounds of food. Fun was had by all!!!
Several Tucson Rotary Club Members attended the Leadership Training Assembly along with 95 other Fellow Rotarians this past Saturday at the Sheraton Tucson Hotel & Suites on Grant Road. There was a variety of workshops with titles such as Using Social Media Effectively, Conflict Resolution, Leading Volunteers, and Membership: Not Just Members. Everyone came away with more knowledge and increased enthusiasm for the year ahead. DGE, Joe Hentges, closed the Assembly by telling the crowded room of members from Rotary Clubs all over our District 5500 to “Make This Coming Year 2017-2018 The Best Year Yet.” And that’s what we are determined to do!
