Holiday Mixer - 12/15/16
Dear Rotarians, spouses, guests and friends;

On behalf of our Rotary Social Committee thanks to you all for helping to make our annual Holiday Mixer such a huge success.  The ambience of the La Miraposa Resort, delicious food, great music, and of course the fun and fellowship all contributed to a memorable holiday evening.

Dorinna and Kari, thanks for the efficient roles you both played throughout the planning of our event.

Stay healthy and safe during the holidays and we’ll see you next year in 2017.

John Lewis
Social Committee Chair

2016 Rotary District 5500 Michael Harris Memorial Ride to End Polio
2016 Rotary District 5500 Michael Harris Memorial Ride to End Polio
Is One For the Books

Many of our cyclists said that with tough headwinds for much of the ride, this was one of the toughest El Tour de Tucson’s they have faced. But they rode on. In many ways this was one of the more special Rides we have held. About 125 cyclists registered to ride in Tucson, a 25% increase over our previous highest total. Twelve clubs and 4 districts hosted Indoor teams that included 225 riders.

About 130 cyclists, friends and family joined us for our Pre-Ride Banquet, which was gifted with the presence of Rotary International President-Elect Ian Riseley from Australia as well as 15-Year Rotarian, Women’s Cycling Land Speed Record Holder (147 mph) and 2016 El Tour Dedication Recipient Denise Mueller. Her coach,  previous men’s cycling speed record holder John Howard joined us as well.

Many Rotary dignitaries participated in this year’s ride. They included Rotary International Vice President Jennifer Jones, Zone25/26 Director Brad Howard, Director-Elect John Matthews, and General Secretary John Hewko.

Our Ride to End Polio has become a Global Event with cyclists from France, Canada and Brazil joining us this year. And each year RI in Evanston recruits and fields their “Miles to End Polio” team.

After all the fun, fellowship, food, and celebration subside, it’s all about raising money so that no child will ever again fear the scourge of Polio. AND THAT WE DID!

Our "final" fund raising numbers are in. And yes, numbers continue to dribble in for a few more weeks. Including generous matches from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the 2016 Ride to End Polio has raised $11,336,014, exceeding the $10 million goal set by District 5500 Governor Sheryl Christenson by more than 10 percent.

Each year we recognize our highest fund-raisers.  Congratulations to the following, whose names will be inscribed on the Harris Trophy located outside the office of RI General Secretary Hewko. Numbers are net, prior to the Gates Foundation match.

  • Rotary International Vice President Jennifer Jones$231,119
  • District 6970 Governor Marshall Butler$181,795
  • Rotary Club of Sebastopol, CA (Indoor Club Team)$15,328
  • Rotary District 6290 (Indoor District Team)$10,050
Congratulations to all of our cyclists, friends, family and volunteers who loaned their generous support. Special thanks to our District 5500 Ride to End Polio Planning Committee members. What a great legacy for Mike Harris and his family, and for the millions of children who will never contract this terrible disease.
Looking For Community Service Projects!
Looking for Community Service Projects! Will you be Available in January ?
By Dave Gallaher and Mike Orcutt, Work Projects Co-Chairs

The Work Projects committee is looking for community service projects helping non-profits in our community with any needs they may have.  We not only help the organizations with their projects but this provides an opportunity for networking and socializing among club members and their friends and family.  It could be a clean-up project, a garden works project, helping put a new look on an old building, etc.  Typically, these projects require very little skilled labor and work great if the project can be completed in 3-4 hours for 5 to 10 volunteers on a Saturday. Rotary shirts should be worn so we can let people know that we Rotarians care about our community. Volunteers do not have to be members of the Rotary Club of Tucson.  You can bring your friends and neighbors.  There will be a waiver of liability form for all participants to sign as recommended by Rotary International.   If you have a project or organization that could use some Rotarian muscle, please call Dave Gallaher (907-4983) or Mike Orcutt (269-1731). Let’s get to work and have some fun!

PS:  Save the date April 14/15 for the Rotary Daze work project at the Triangle Y Ranch Camp on the back side of Mt. Lemmon.

Tucson Roadrunners - 12/21/16
What fun we’re going to have this Wednesday evening when 44 of us Rotarians and friends gather to watch Tucson Roadrunners cross hockey sticks with the Bakersfield Condors at the beautifully upgraded TCC Arena in downtown. We will also be supporting our downtown community. Rio Nuevo’s Fletcher McCusker, in a recent column of the "AZ Star", reminded Tucsonans of the improvements that were made to the Tucson Convention Center that helped attract the team to Tucson. Fellow Rotarian, Mark Irvin, worked hard as a Rio Nuevo Board member to also make this happen. In the section where we’re sitting, each member and guest will get a Tucson Roadrunners ball cap. How’s that for customer service? Any last minute questions?  Please contact me at ellie@thetempconnection.com or call me at work #323-3100 or my cell #360-7181.

I will be standing near the ticket office of the TCC at 6:15 pm Wednesday evening, 12/21, to hand out tickets to those members who haven’t received their tickets yet. GO TUCSON ROADRUNNERS!
Save The Date:  April 14th & 15th - YMCA Ranch Camp Project
The 2nd Annual Rotary Daze YMCA Ranch Camp Project is scheduled for April 14 & 15, 2017.

Once again we will have camp at the ranch Friday night and work on Saturday.  Mark your calendars!
