Due to the Tucson Classics Car Show held on Saturday, October 15, 2016, there will be no lunch meeting on Wednesday, October 19, 2016. This is considered a DARK DAY, so no make up is required. We'll see you at our next scheduled lunch meeting on October 26, 2016.
Doing good in the world begins at home and what a phenomenal weekend we had at our 10th Anniversary Tucson Classics Car Show event. Well over 20,000 people came, over 420 classic cars showcased, well over $100,000 raised and countless numbers of children, teens, and families in need will receive the best compassionate care through five local charities.
As I reflect on our five beneficiaries….. I see a child holding his own big beautiful book in his hands for the first time and attempting to read to his mother….A student is learning a new skill in avionics….A mother is regaining her life through a substance abuse program that works… A homeless teenager is receiving her high school diploma….Siblings are able to stay together in a loving and large foster homerather than being separated. Rotary Club of Tucson is in the forefront of responding to such local needs and making our community a better place.
As I listened throughout the day I heard people say: the car show just gets better every year; this is such a fun family event; I had no idea Arizona had cars like these. I feel like I’m in California; we wouldn't miss this car show for the world and we look forward to it every year; we are surprising our son whose birthday is today and he turns 9 years old; it’s my 40th birthday and what better way to celebrate than here with friends and see some really great cars; it got pretty hot but it sure was a good car show. Are these all volunteers?
Yes, we are all volunteers as Rotarians, and as friends and as family of Rotarians. Over 670 of us became one team with a single focus 'doing good in our community'.
Howdy Rotary fans, I know that everyone is excited about the Friday Night Car Show Dinner and Silent Auction and of course the Car Show. So let’s get started. PRESIDENT ELLIE opened the meeting and KATHY KITAGAWA gave the Inspiration with Rosh Hashanah which is 10 days after the Jewish New Year. This is a day of repentance and forgiveness – we can all use that knowledge and behavior.
The Pledge and Song was performed by GARY HIRSCH and VICKI JACOBS. JEFF RONSTADT introduced the guests and, the birthday boys and girls were: ALLYN BULZOMI – Interact/Rotaract extraordinaire, RICK ROSE, former PRESIDENT JONI CONDIT, and former PRESIDENT DAVE GALLAHER – who just came back from the Havasupai Rotary kids trip (28 kids!). Way to go DAVE, we hope you recover from the hike!
SCOTT VAUGHAN introduced new member JIM WOOD, JR., son of former member, Jim Wood, Sr. He is the spitting image of his Dad! JIM and his wife are expecting a baby any day now – yeah! There were nine “car show” announcements, so let’s get ready to rumble!!
Our program was introduced by CONRAD PLIMPTON (fellow Rowdy Table member), Marie Wesselhoft of MSDx (Multiple Sclerosis Diagnostics). This company is also working on Parkinsons and Alzheimer disease. Their business model is to sample blood from the brain to preempt and predict the disease before it manifests and disables the patient. Wow, they are also working with Roche – formerly Ventana Medical in Oro Valley.
We also had a flyer on each table listing the RCOT Candidates for the Board of Directors 2017-2019. They are PETER BEAHAN, TERESA LIVERZANI-BAKER, TOM MCQUILLEN, NANCY PURDIN, BRETT STEIN and DAVE WHITE. Wow what a fabulous list of Tucson’s and Rotary’s best. Good luck and thank you for putting yourself out to help the club.
PRESIDENT ELLIE gave the toast and it was about (car show) “teamwork”. Thank you club members for bringing together everyone for this fun and fellowship event!
