Stories
The gift of organ donation is based on the hope and generosity of others at the worst moment in their lives, in many cases.

Arizonans, like most people in the country, support donation and some have even taken action to register their wishes on the Arizona Donor Registry.  Currently 54% of the adult population in Arizona has registered to be organ, tissue and eye donors. At Donor Network of Arizona, we continue to encourage individuals to register since there are over 125,000 individuals waiting for an organ transplant; 2,400 of those are here in Arizona, and thousands are awaiting a tissue transplant.

Visit our website if you would like to register or gain more information at www.dnaz.org. It only takes a minute to save or heal someone’s life.

Biography - Tim Brown

Tim Brown has served as the President and Chief Executive Officer for the Donor Network of Arizona for nearly 13 years. Donor Network of Arizona (DNA) is the federally designated organ procurement agency for the state of Arizona. DNA is also a fully accredited tissue recovery agency and an accredited eye bank. DNA works in close collaboration with Arizona hospitals to make the most of life through the gift of organ, eye and tissue donation. Prior to joining DNA, Brown spent 17 years at University Medical Center in Tucson, where he served as a Vice President, leader of the Reengineering Project and director of Cardiopulmonary Services.
Born and raised in Kansas City, Brown received a Bachelor of Science degree in Respiratory Therapy from the University of Kansas and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Phoenix. He resides in Scottsdale with his wife, Cathy, and enjoys sports, volunteering for the Fiesta Bowl, which he is the current committee chair and spending time with his four children, their families and his grandchildren.

We had another very interesting program, this time a tactical review of Border Patrol services provided by Supervisory Agent Fred McGrew. I think we all recognize the job Border Patrol performs in apprehending migrants attempting to cross the border. I think it is easy to overlook the service these agents provide in apprehending drug smugglers and illegal drugs crossing the border.  Over 1M pounds of marijuana yearly. Wow, that’s a lot of grass! In addition, it is easy to overlook the fact that many migrants get stranded in the desert every year, and Border Patrol agents help save hundreds of lives each year as well. I don’t think our Border Patrol agents receive enough credit for the thankless job they perform each day they put their lives on the line in defense of this nation’s borders. I’m sure I speak for all Rotarians when I say Thank You For Your Service!

We were introduced to three new members during the meeting. ROGER HARWELL introduced us to Dr. JULIE SHERRILL. ROGER included a great dose of humor in his introduction, and I must say not bad humor for an engineer! Being a fellow Big 10 graduate, my favorite was when he described JULIE as a graduate of “one of the state universities in Ohio.” JULIE was quick to correct and let ROGER know she attended THE Ohio State University! In addition, CHUCK SAWYER introduced us to BECKY REBENSTORF and DARYL ROSS introduced us to MERLE HENKEL. And in case you weren’t listening, JULIE, BECKY and MERLE all work at The Gregory School and are our Corporate Member Partners for the Tucson Classics Car Show.

In closing, I’d like to remind everyone that football season is here and our Cat’s start their season on Thursday night. I’m definitely looking forward to another year of exciting football games and a run at the Pac 12 title. GO CATS!!!

This week, the Rotary Club of Tucson is lucky to have a guest columnist:

In the Heat of the Moment

Our recent Sunday afternoon party began as many summer relative parties begin at our house. Everyone was gathered to join in celebration of those with August birthdays. Many of our favorite relatives are clustered around the kitchen table snacking on munchies, laughing, telling long-winded stories, and enjoying a variety of cool, festive drinks. Some of our other favorite relatives are seated in the family room sharing their recent life events, enjoying food and fun, and occasionally fanning themselves. As I glanced around the room, I noticed some family relatives with red, damp faces, especially realizing this is an indoor party. To me, it seemed the air conditioning was just barely keeping up with the August Tucson heat.

After catering to everyone’s food and beverage needs, I plopped into a vacant corner of the couch only to be immediately asked by one of Phil’s relatives, “Hmmm…isn’t this a relatively new air conditioner?” I smiled, fanned myself with larger, expansive arm waving and replied, “Well, gosh…all I know is there must be a lot of hot wind bags around here!” Everyone snickered and continued to enjoy warm conversations.

Phil was just sitting down to enjoy some snacks, when one of his favorite brothers asked, “So President Phil…how’s Kiwanis going for you?” I’m thinking, oh my gosh, Kiwanis? Really? Hasn’t his brother been listening to us all these years? Hasn’t he seen pictures of us in our Rotary work shirts? Didn’t I sell him a fist full of Rotary car show tickets? I glanced across the room at Phil. I’m trying to notice if Phil is choking or smiling or turning redder than usual. Knowing the temperature was really continuing to rise, Phil took a long sip of his Arnold Palmer drink, smiled at his brother, took the question in a smooth stride, and replied, “There is nothing much cooler in my life than being President of the Rotary Club of Tucson.”

Moments later Phil’s mom chimed in, “Well Phil, what is Rotary anyway?” At this point in time, I’ve nearly passed out on the couch, partly due to a rising room temperature, and partly because Phil and I have been talking to Phil’s family about Rotary for nearly 26 years. In Phil’s calm, mature, solid, and caring manner, he replied, “Well Mom, Rotary is about 110 years old, it is a service organization, and there are about 1.2 million of us in the world. We all work together to make great things happen in Tucson, in Arizona, and around the world. In fact, we have almost eradicated Polio all by ourselves.”

Phil smiled and said he could share his passion of Rotary for hours. He gently explained the positive, unique and ethical changes Rotary brings to this world. I tried to sit still and let Phil discuss his love for Rotary in his mature and systematic ways. As soon as there was a slight break in his sentence, I simply burst out to everyone listening in the room, “Rotary is a blast! We are fun, we are kind, we are ingenious, we are sincere in all of our efforts, and we love to help others! We are filled with goodness, goodwill, and we strive for peaceful environments for everyone throughout the world! On top of everything, we do fill the world with goodness! And, in fact, all of you should be in a Rotary club!”
