Traveling to our hump day RCOT meeting was a “challenge” to say the least; like an “obstacle course” was more like it. Hopefully in two weeks we will have all lanes and gates open again.
PRESIDENT ELLIE opened the meeting with a Moment of Silence for JEFF HEATH’S wife, Pat, who passed on. JEFF, we love you and will be there for you and your family.

CHARLOTTE HARRIS presented our President Elect and her Son-in-Law, CLIFF BOWMAN his Paul Harris Society membership. PE CLIFF, who will be #97 on the Presidential list, has a multitude of accolades. 1) A tremendous father, husband and family man, 2) Lt. Colonel with three combat deployments and a Bronze Star, 3) he is a math wizard with a UofA degree. Wow, our future president is setting a very high achievement bar. Plus, he still trains A-10 Warthog pilots!!
SAA FONDA INSLEY gave out the raffle prizes: Harlow Gardens, 1-800-Flowers, 2 sets of Biosphere Tickets from FRANK DAHL, and ROBERT O’BRIEN had a ride-a-long at the Tucson Speedway.
Under Announcements, PRESIDENT ELLIE gave a reminder for the Grant Management Seminar this Saturday 5/27/17. ELLIE needs two people to attend to keep the club compliant for Rotary Grants. PRESIDENT ELLIE also reminded everyone of our monthly social mixer Thursday night at the Trident II.

ROGER HARWELL gave us the numbers for the beer sales at the 4th Avenue Street Fair - $2,600 and JON WANG took orders for some beautiful Rotary shirts.
JOHN LEWIS introduced our program, Chuck Tampio – Our National Memorials. The first memorial was at Bunker Hill. In 1884, the Washington Memorial was erected – it represents a “petrified ray of sunlight” – who knew? In 1922, was the Lincoln Memorial, considered by most to be the Civil War memorial, and then, the WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War memorials. There is no official WWI memorial.
This presentation was a top shelf view of our memorials to the fallen heroes who gave us our freedom.
The meeting was closed by PRESIDENT ELLIE with a toast to the veterans, war memorials, and current men and women who are serving our country – Happy Memorial Day fellow Rotarians!
Tom Moulton has had a 49-year career operating destination leisure attractions and theme parks holding senior positions while working for major companies including Six Flags Theme Parks, Opryland USA, Hanna Barbera Land in Texas, and the Audubon Nature Institute, which operates the Audubon Zoo and New Orleans Aquarium of the Americas.
Tom will become the new executive director of the non-profit Southern Arizona Attractions Alliance on June 1. Prior to this new appointment, Tom served the community for the past 16 years as the Director of Economic Development and Tourism for Pima County, overseeing 14 leased property attractions, from zoos to educational institutions, in addition to directing the County’s tourism marketing and “Quality of Life” development within the County.
Prior to joining the County, he was the General Manager for two western heritage theme parks, Old Tucson Studios, a family western theme park and operating movie studio and Walter Knott’s historical landmark property, Calico Ghost Town, owned and operated by San Bernardino County in Southern California.
Tom is very active in the community as a founding member of the Southern Arizona Attractions Alliance, board members of the Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance (SAACA), Southern Arizona Lodging and Resort Association (SALARA), Skål International Tucson and Tucson City of Gastronomy. Tom also serves in the Marketing Committee of Visit Tucson and a past board member of Visit Tucson) for 12 years.
Interact, Rotoract, RYLA, Youth Exchange! These are empowering titles for Rotary Youth Services programs that serve young people ranging in age from 12-30. There are 12,300 Interact clubs (ages 12-18) in 133 countries. Rotoract Clubs (ages 18-30) are established in 167 countries and New Generations Service Exchange, a newer short term customized program for university students and young professionals up to age 30 is far reaching. All of these youth related clubs showcase young leaders in action who will have a sustainable impact on Rotary International for generations to come. The link between Rotary and youth for many clubs (including our own) is remarkable. Look no further than Amphi High School or UA Campus and you‘ll find our active Rotoract and Interact clubs busy planning their next weekly community service project. Not monthly, but weekly. Just ask our member Allyn Bulzomi whose leadership has propelled these young people to see a need to help others in our community and generate an action plan that is carried out week after week in responding to various community needs. Just recently at our Rotary Days Service project at the Triangle Y YMCA Camp, our Amphi Interact Club and UA Rotoract clubs were well represented helping on the various projects for the camp. The students also take part in our District’s exemplary RYLA Leadership program held each January in Prescott.
Our youth programs provide many opportunities for Club members to participate in these programs and help develop new leaders and most importantly, future Rotarians. There are numerous members that have participated in the Rotary Youth Exchange program and have developed lifetime relationships with the students and their families. Just ask Roger Harwell, Drew Vactor, Jennifer Hoffman, Vic Jacobs, and Dave Gallaher what RYE means to them and their families. Each year since 2007, member Dave Gallaher has helped lead a large group of Arizona Youth Exchange students (25-30) down to Havasupai Falls. This exciting camping trip is in addition to his work in finding homes for the students from foreign countries wanting to experience different cultures. For more information about any of these programs please reach out to Allyn Bulzomi or Dave Gallaher. Dave is the Club’s current Youth Exchange Officer. Allyn is in charge of Youth Services.

It’s Not Too Late To Attend the Rotary International Convention Atlanta, June 10-14.
If you haven’t already made plans to attend, it’s not too late to register at riconvention.org. In the words of RI President John Germ, “There is simply no better way to round off another great year in Rotary than by coming together with 40,000 or so of your fellow Rotarians to share ideas, find inspiration, and have a great time together.”
Always a fun time with Tucson Rotary members, family members and friends at our monthly Happy Hour. 25 of us showed up last Thursday evening and enjoyed visiting over a cold brew and a bite to eat. Fonda is right. The fried dill pickles are delicious!
Several of the Rotarian hikers got out early Monday morning to enjoy a training hike on Mt. Lemmon. The weather was perfect. We’re planning a monthly hike throughout the summer and fall so let Chuck know if you’d like to be on the distribution list. It’s always a fun time.
