Holiday Mixer - Thursday, 12/15/16
Hello fellow Rotarians.  A wonderful night is being planned for our Annual Holiday Mixer, Thursday, December 15th, 5:30 – 9:30 p.m. at La Mariposa.  The resort is located at 1501 N. Houghton Road, Tucson, AZ, between Tanque Verde Rd. and Speedway Blvd.  The menu for the evening is an Italian Buffet with all the trimmings and a delicious dessert table.  We have a DJ locked in for the evening to play music appropriate for our holiday spirit, and a cash bar will be the plan for the evening.

As always, it’s critical we provide the resort with an accurate account of how many members and guests are attending.  Please be sure to register for the event (Deadline is Monday, 12/12 at noon) by scrolling down the left side of the Rotary home page to “Upcoming Events” and click on “Holiday Mixer”.  Please also register your guests; cost is $30 per person which will be billed to your account.  Remember, this is a replacement meeting for our Wednesday 12/14 lunch meeting, so no charge for members.

Come join us for a very special evening at La Mariposa.  The resort is a beautiful setting and should be a night of fun and fellowship for all who attend.  Happy Holidays to all of you and hope to see you on Thursday…

President's Reflections

December, for Rotary, is designated as Disease Prevention and Treatment month - a time to reflect on how Rotary's numerous and varied global and community projects are making a huge impact.

Rotary’s top priority is the eradication of polio, but our members take on far greater responsibilities to fight disease.  They set up health camps and training facilities in undeveloped countries and in communities struggling with HIV/AIDS and malaria. For example, our Club was the international partner for Nigeria Family Health Days this past September where thousands of people visited the health camps that provided testing, vaccinations, treatment and counseling for many diseases and conditions.  Rotarians also design and build the infrastructure for doctors, nurses, governments and partners to reach one in six people in the world who can’t afford to pay for health care. Our Club last year supported the Dental Partnership program of El Rio Foundation that helps uninsured and underinsured adults and especially seniors get the dental care they need. We are Rotarians Serving Humanity by supporting projects that help alleviate the health challenges of disadvantaged people around the world. We are also Rotarians Serving Humanity in very personal ways that spill over when addressing physical health needs. A Charlie Brown quote expresses this beautifully: "Sometimes we need someone to simply be there. Not to fix anything or do anything in particular, but just to feel we are cared for and supported."  Yes, Rotary cares and cares deeply, here and around the world. Our mission to serve others is endless.

Mystery Editor - 12/7/16
A wonderful chicken dinner was served to open our December 7, 2016 meeting.  PRESIDENT ELLIE presided over a moment of silence for this 75th Pearl Harbor anniversary.  Thank you to the world’s “Greatest Generation”!  Our President then thanked everyone for our CAID Industries chili cook-off get together.  Also, Madam President wished TOM ANDREWS good luck for his upcoming surgery.  We will all say a prayer for our tremendous member and wonderful person, TOM ANDREWS!

ROB LAMASTER gave the Inspiration and GARY HIRSCH accompanied CARL MAES with “America The Beautiful”.  We were also reminded about vocational giving to the TRVFA fund – this is a tax credit.  JERRY HARRIS introduced guests and visiting Rotarians.  Happy Birthday wishes went to CHAR ERNSTEIN, JIM DAVENPORT, DALE BERG, and GARY SCHEER.

PAULINE HECHLER introduced our newest member, LIZ MCMAHON.  LIZ seems to be well connected to many of the club members.  Past President DAVE GALLAHER and now turned auctioneer, auctioned off a pair of UofA basketball tickets.

Under the announcements category we have the following:

PRESIDENT ELLIE – Tucson Roadrunners hockey game – 12/21/16 @ 7:05 p.m. – please sign up.

NANCY PURDIN – Salvation Army Bell Ringing on Saturday.

JO DECHATELET – IRA/QCD – qualified charitable distributions for the end of the tax year.

ALLYN BULZOMI – tax credit for Interact Club at Amphi School - $400 – Single Filer, $800 – Joint Filer.

ROGER HARWELL and CARL MAES – gave us a skit and song for the Arizona Bowl on the 30th.

And finally, CLIFF BOWMAN, next year’s president announced the PEE – it is …. CHUCK SAWYER!  Wow, we are really lucky to have CHUCK serve as president of this club.  He is a fine man, father, husband, and business man.  Thank you CHUCK, please support his Cartridge World.

Our President introduced member, KIMBERLY ELY, who introduced the “Tucson Symphony Orchestra Quintet”.  They played five lovely holiday songs.  Two female trumpets, one tuba, one trombone and one French horn made up this exquisite group.  They played some great holiday tunes that were so much fun to listen to.

Our meeting was toasted by PRESIDENT ELLIE to music ~~ the spirit of our lives!

See you at the Holiday Mixer, Thursday, 12/15.  No lunch meeting on Wednesday, 12/14.
Rotary Project - Salvation Army Bell Ringing
It was a beautiful Saturday in Tucson, and the Rotary Club of Tucson, along with our Rotary Scholars, were out in full force ringing those bells for the Salvation Army.  Thank you to all that spent a couple hours of your time and also to those that sponsored a kettle to raise dollars to help out needy children and their families.  Results are being tallied and will be announced at a later date.  Thank you again for all you do for Rotary and for the community!

Riders Spreading The Joy
It was a joy Saturday morning to transport gifts on our bikes to the Firemen at South Tucson Fire Dept. The First Responders will deliver the gifts to the kids on Christmas Eve. Bless them all! Thanks Rotary and GABA riders for making this happen.
Tucson Rotary Hiking Group
Bill and Melody Mesch were gracious hosts for our Tucson Rotary hiking group as we gathered for dinner this past Friday and talked about all of the fun we had going down, down, down into the Grand Canyon in late October of this year. Thanks to our fearless hiking leader (and current President-Elect Nominee),Chuck Sawyer, for getting us down and back safely. Each of us finished the hike in good spirit and all in one piece.
Tucson Roadrunners Hockey Game - 12/21/16
Let’s go to  the Tucson Roadrunners Hockey game on December 21st, Wednesday evening, with game time at 7:05 pm! It will be a nice night of fellowship and fun plus a chance to see the Roadrunners beat the Bakersfield Condors. Rio Nuevo’s Fletcher McCusker, in a recent column of the AZ Star, reminded Tucsonans of the improvements that were made to the Tucson Convention Center that helped attract the team to Tucson. Fletcher commented  that the first game brought 6750 fans downtown but there have been plenty of empty seats since. We should fill some of those seats and support downtown, our hockey team, and fellow Rotarian, Mark Irvin, who has worked so hard on the Rio Nuevo Board to make things like this happen that improves our entire community. I’ll reserve a block of tickets. Please contact me if you want to go!  (Fletcher has only missed 1 game)

…Watch the Tucson Roadrunners cross hockey sticks with the Bakersfield Condors at TCC Arena in downtown Tucson. Game starts at 7:05 PM on both days (Tues-Wed). The Tucson Roadrunners are the American Hockey League affiliate of the Arizona Coyotes ice hockey team.
