Tucson Crime Free Coalition
The Tucson Crime Free Coalition was created in September of 2022 to focus on solutions for the fentanyl and crime crisis that is occurring in our community. To date The Tucson Crime Free Coalition has grown to nearly 3,000 members, and is run by four volunteers, Kevin Daily, Monica Carlson, Oliver Swan and Josh Jacobsen. The Tucson Crime Free Coalition's mission is a safer community for all through the enforcement of our laws. We are advocates for adequate staffing and resources for law enforcement, treatment for those in need and prosecution for criminals that are unwilling to abide by our laws. The website is tucsoncrimefree.com
Mystery Editor ~ 3/1/23
The meeting started with an Asian Buffet. PRESIDENT BRUCE called the meeting to order and new member WALLY JOHNSON led the pledge and a acapella version of My Country Tis of Thee. KYM ADAIR presented a video in honor of Black History Month (February) that was of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. giving his speech at the Mall in Washington, D.C. “Free at last, free at last!”

DAN KALM introduced a good number of guests. Then, esteemed author of the book “Let Your Path Find You”, BOB LOGAN introduced our speaker, Dr. Kevin Leman. Dr. Leman talked about birth order and how it affects why we are the way we are. In general, 1st born kids are the real go getters of the group but there is one group that is even more driven. Only children take the prize when it comes to reliable, driven people who are winners. The majority of US Presidents were either an only child or the first born. That goes for astronauts too. Middle kids are great at negotiating and go with the flow. They make great entrepreneurs. The babies of the family are the social, outgoing group. They make good salespeople and are great at reading people. Dr. Leman always offers such a fun and engaging presentation and today was no different. He even brought and signed his own book for the Make Way for Books Library.

PRESIDENT BRUCE offered an insight into women in rotary for Women’s History Month (March). The first women were allowed to be members of Rotary in 1989. Jennifer Jones was the first Rotary International President and is currently still completing her term.

BOB MORKEN was celebrating his birthday. He bought a girl a diet coke in Dusseldorf, Germany many years ago. Now they are married with daughters.

SCOTT VAUGHAN presented a Paul Harris Award to PRESIDENT BRUCE and this was his second award. SCOTT gave BRUCE the American Heritage Foundation book, The Presidency.

DAN KALM held a 25/50/25 drawing and MARIANNE FREITAS won. She didn’t win the big prize and that’s probably good since STEVE PICKERING won the jackpot last week.

The following announcements were made:
  • Rillito River Clean Up will be this Saturday, March 4th
  • Triangle Y Ranch Project – April 22nd. We may be building a Community Garden among other things.
  • Club Assembly will be March 22nd
  • El Grupo Youth Cycling was given $1,000 from our club. They will host an Open House on March 30th.
  • BRUCE RICHARDSON will be leading two hikes up the Phoneline Trail. This Saturday, March 4th and next Saturday, March 11th. Meet at the trailhead at 8am if you’re interested.
  • WAYNE MEYER presented a blue badge to BRITTANY BATTLE.  Congratulations!
PRESIDENT BRUCE offered a toast quoting Michael J. Fox “Family is not an important thing. Its everything.” Then, we were dismissed.
Phoneline Trail ~ March 11th
Good morning fellow "Death March" enthusiasts,

We have the 10-mile hike again on the calendar for March 11th.

Saturday March 11th - 8AM meet time at the east trail entrance, Sabino Canyon main lot
Phoneline Trail looping back on Sabino Canyon Road
Please note the below link provides insight on the different trails in the Canyon.  Total hike is just over 10 miles so a nice kick starter for building endurance for longer mileage trips.  Hike time is anticipated at 5-5.5 hours with breaks.  The projected forecast for the first hike is starting temperature at 40 degrees, warming to 70 in the afternoon and under sunny skies

Hope to see you on the trails!

Miles of Memories
Miles of Memories

I shared with those in attendance on the 13th that this next year I want us to share “Miles of Memories” together. I referenced the memories we have created together over the years and the impact we have had in so many others lives as well as our own.

The children and the parents receiving the grass ball field in San Carlos transformed from a dirt lot. The recipients and their families that obtained their mobility by receiving a wheelchair in Nogales. The memories of our member that participated along with the memories of working together on various local workday projects. Our hiking, golf, home hospitality fellowships and the list goes on.

I ask for you to help me on “our journey” over this next year by sponsoring me in the “Miles of Memories.” My goal is to walk a minimum of 35 miles a week, 1,825 for the year and honestly want to surpass 2000+. I would like for you to consider donating by the mile and we will share the outcome at the first meeting of each month on my progress.

Donations can go to the Foundation toward a Paul Harris, the President’s Discretionary Fund, or others of your choosing. I want us to have fun on our journey over this next year and to INSPIRE each other and our benefactors through the world of Rotary.

Thank you for your support in making our 102nd year one where we create memories together.
