Allan Hamilton is a graduate from Harvard Medical School and completed his neurosurgical residency training at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Dr. Hamilton holds four Professorships at the University of Arizona in Neurosurgery, Radiation Oncology, Psychology, and Electrical and Computer Engineering. He has been chosen by his neurosurgical peers as “One of America’s Best Doctors” for the last eighteen consecutive years and selected as “One of the Leading Intellects of the Twenty-First Century.”
Dr. Hamilton has held positions as Chief of Neurosurgery, Chairman of the Department of Surgery at the University of Arizona. Dr. Hamilton now serves as Executive Director of the Arizona Simulation Technology and Education Center, a multi-disciplinary think-tank at the Arizona Health Sciences Center devoted to developing new technologies and training procedures to reduced preventable medical adverse events. He has authored more than twenty medical textbook chapters, fifty peer-review research articles, and has served on the editorial board of several medical journals. He is also a decorated Army officer who served in Operation Desert Storm. Dr. Hamilton's first book, The Scalpel and the Soul (2008,Tarcher/Penguin USA) was awarded the 2009 Nautilus Silver Award, which was conceived to recognize world-changing books. In 2012, his second book, Zen Mind, Zen Horse—The Science and Spirituality of Training Horses (2011, Storey Publishing) won the Nautilus Gold Award. Previous Nautilus Gold Award winners include Deepak Chopra, Eckhart Tolle, and His Holiness the Dalai Lama. His books have been translated into several languages. He has been the subject of two award-winning documentaries. The first is Playing with Magic which chronicles his work with horses and was directed by Emmy-award winning director, Wayne Ewing. The second, Consider the Conversation, reviews his advocacy for end-of-life care for terminally-ill patients and was recently featured on PBS. His equine work has been showcased on the NBC “Today” Show, ABC News, CNN, and PBS. He is a frequent guest on NPR, and has been featured in Western Horseman, Equus, and Horse & Rider. For the last several years Dr. Hamilton has served as medical script consultant on more than one hundred and fifty episodes of the hit TV series Grey’s Anatomy and four seasons with Private Practice. His most recent book, Lead with Your Heart—Lessons from a Life with Horses is a collection of 112 short essays on leadership, spirituality, and transformation was just published in the Fall of 2016. Lead with Your Heart won the 2016 Nautilus Gold Award, Benjamin Franklin Silver Award, and a Silver IPPY Award from the Independent Publishers Book Association.
The mid-week RCOT meeting began with her Excellency ELLIE leading things off. JIM MURPHY gave the Inspiration about Dragonfly Village and the Amity Foundation for the homeless.
Pledge and Song was performed of course by Liberace – GARY HIRSCH and pledge and song – PRODIP DUTTA. Guest Introductions were presented by KEVIN WONG. And, our three Birthdays were TOM BROWNING – introduced to Rotary by his Father in 1965; NINA TRASOFF – 1991 who said when she joined it was like being a member of an “Old Men’s Club”; and PAT LENNAN – he beat up on JOHN LEWIS for saying that he (JOHN) was now 80 years old.
We had three Paul Harris presentations: ANN PLIMPTON, Family Member; RABBI STEPHANIE AARON, Chaverim Congregation; and JOE PENNINGTON, financial advisor and former State of Arizona Boxing Commissioner.
We had the following raffle prizes: Harlow Gardens, Performance Footwear, Sullivan’s Eatery and Creamery, Archive Advantage and an Este Lauder Make-up Bag.

Our program was introduced by ELLEN WHEELER. Ray Clarke, Director of the Dragonfly Village spoke eloquently and powerfully about how our city and Amity have helped out the less fortunate among us. This transitional housing facility serves over 80 individuals per year to get back on their feet. Mr. Clarke also spoke about going back to the inner city and his experience in Cincinnati, Ohio. If anyone knows about coming through a struggle, it is Mr. Clarke. Thank god there are men and women like Mr. Clarke that help people through the fires of life.
PRESIDENT ELLIE brought our meeting to a close with a toast to the 2017 UofA Wildcat Softball Title winners.

Our club’s Orville McPherson Award is an annual award, and our club’s highest, given to a member of the Rotary Club of Tucson who best exemplifies the ideals of Rotary. The recipient of this award is someone who consistently goes above and beyond giving 100% to make our club a very special place for all of us.
Orville McPherson, for whom this award is named, was a charter member of our club since its founding April 1, 1921. He was active in initial efforts to start Rotary in Tucson and was our first club secretary. Orville received local and national recognition. His many accomplishments include assisting with the establishment of Tucson’s municipal airport and our Veteran’s Hospital, along with being named Tucson’s Centennial Man of the Year on his birthday in 1976.
At our May 10, 2017 meeting, CINDY GODWIN was named this year’s Orville McPherson Award winner. Cindy is a member who always goes above and beyond for our club, never wanting recognition. She has been a member since 2004, sponsored by former member Hank Peck.
- She has been an outstanding leader in forming the structure of our Tucson
Classics Car Show and served on the Strategic Leadership Team for several years.
- She led a committee, with ARNIE JACOBSEN, to update our Foundation’s 5 year
strategic plan.
- She worked with CHARLOTTE HARRIS to identify and publish 97 years of our
Foundation’s policies and continues to update the TCCS policies.
- She is a past member of the Reading Seed Board and was a reading coach
- Working with Pat Zumbush and others, Cindy led the amazing committee of Rotarians
last year to attract new sponsors for our car show, resulting in the biggest increase of
sponsor money EVER for our 2016 TCCS which was an 81% increase over the 2015
show.
She graduated with a BA in English from Ohio Wesleyan University and is an alum of
Professional Management School sponsored by Counselors Academy of Public
Relations Society of America. She had her own marketing business in Tucson from 1998 until retirement in 2007.
Cindy, formerly from Columbus, Ohio, and a resident of Tucson since 1980, is married to Jim and they have three children.
Her past affiliations to name A FEW: Community Foundation, Public Relations Society of American, American Heart Assoc., Tucson Museum of Art Advisory Board,
Assistance League of Tucson Advisory Board, Junior League of Tucson, Soroptomist International of Desert Tucson, in addition to fundraiser committees for many local non-profits, far too many to name them all.
A marketing guru with a witty sense of humor, Cindy is an idea person, a perfectionist in all she does, is an inspiration to me, and a very dear friend.

Training session on state liquor laws that was required for the 4th Avenue Street Fair will be included for members and other volunteers selling beverages and food on Friday night and Saturday.
Although the major distribution of 50 tickets to each Club member will not take place until June, a number of Rotarians would like to start selling tickets now. To secure tickets to sell now for this year’s Car Show, Rotarians should contact Roger Harwell at rharwell@glhn.com.
Contracts and agreements are continually being updated and will be stored in one place for easier tracking from year to year. New website is working well.
There is emphasis on identifying Mentees who are being trained for all major areas so consistency and sustainability will be built in.
