Please remember, due to the Car Show this weekend there will be NO lunch meeting on Wednesday, October 21, 2015.  Our next scheduled meeting will be Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at the DoubleTree in our regular Salons E,F,G,H.  Here's to a successful Car Show on Saturday.  See you all on the 28th!

Good day everyone and here is the information from our Rotary Meeting held October 14.  This meeting was filled with information dealing with the Classics Car Show.  Thank you all for attending this critical meeting and look forward to next Wednesday having off…you all deserve it after a weekend of festivities!

Our Rotary meeting was kicked off by President PHIL GUTT.  He wanted everyone to know BOB MORKEN has entered hospice care, and if you know him or the family I know they would love to hear from you.  There is no better time than today.  JOHN LEWIS then read a wonderful Invocation that truly was inspirational.  Our newest member RUBY PECKFORD then led us in the Pledge and told some interesting trivia on how, when, and where “America The Beautiful” came to be.  This wonderful patriotic song is her favorite-mine too-and now we all have a better understanding of how it was written.  GARY HIRSCH once again, as he has so many times, was excellent accompanying RUBY.

An excellent lunch was served with wonderful fellowship and energy in anticipation of Car Show Weekend! DAVID PASHKOW introduced visiting Rotarians and guests complete with an umbrella that he assured us would work to keep the sun shining this weekend.  Birthday Rotarians were RICK ROSE & DAVE GALLAHER.  Their ages were omitted (good thing) but they were very thankful to their sponsors and mentors for helping get them involved with such a fantastic group of people.  I would also be remiss if I didn’t mention the Rotary Exchange Program that DAVE loves so much.  Remember this fine program, and also help with those Scholarship Cups.  Our youth and education is our future…support it!

Next ELLIE PATTERSON introduced RUBY PECKFORD whose background was very interesting in many aspects of media.  She even Directed Jimmy Stewart at one time, and get this, he told her she was as good as anyone he had ever worked with.  Welcome to RUBY and thank you ELLIE for bringing in such a vibrant interesting new Rotarian!

Sergeant At Arms ROBERT O’BRIEN then took over handling the raffle with many fun prizes, and was kind to all by not levying any fines.  He then turned the microphone over to BILLY ANASTOPOULOS to auction off tickets to the Homecoming Football Game and Phantom tickets.  BILLY  did an excellent job and we thank highest bidders for their donation to the club.

PRESIDENT PHIL then gave us the lowdown on how the San Carlos Trip would be changed in the future.  The hope is that even more goodwill and help will be able to be given to not only San Carlos but also its sister city.  MIKE ORCUTT then put a plug in for the Gaslight Theatre production Henry Porter.  We hope many Rotarians will sign up for that fun event that will be held in early November.  Then ALLYN BULZOMI promoted the RYLA cups that would help fund our Interact Club, and rumor has it by the end of the day he was sold out.  Congratulations!

Our Program was next with ROGER HARWELL, our Car Show Chair for The 9th Annual Tucson Classics Car Show, relaying lots of information about the show and giving many thanks to a HUGE assortment of people that have worked on the show all year long.  The number of names is too long to list them all, but suffice it to say we all are indebted for all of their hard work.  And ROGER wanted me to express his total gratitude to all of our Rotarians that have played even a small part in this incredible event. Hope everyone had a fun weekend, and until next time…Go Rotary Club of Tucson!

THE PEAK OF A WONDERFUL LEGACY

For twenty-five years, our club joined with a Rotary Club in San Carlos, Mexico in a Christmas celebration entertaining the families, and particularly the children, of that area. Occasionally, we’ve did more than just throw a party when we provided lasting assistance to the region, including improvements to the library and donation of computers. This long-standing relationship was a key reason our club took on the challenging soccer field project completed earlier this year.

It’s no secret that there has been dwindling attendance by our club at the December party  - what used to be two full bus-loads was less than a van full last year. In consideration of that and our exhilarating success of the soccer field, we’ve opened discussions with the San Carlos club about potential, new events that would be more along the lines of a service project; sustainable and eligible for grant funding, which the parties were not.

As you can imagine, it’s just not feasible to have a well-thought-out service project by December. Matt Blair is leading the talks with our Rotarian colleagues in San Carlos, and our club is considering several international projects in addition to possibilities near La Manga, a neighborhood RCOT members saw first-hand as having much greater needs that the much-improved area of San Carlos.

As the two Rotary clubs discuss new possibilities, we remember those parties that built the relationship and had the side benefit of providing fun opportunities for us to get to know our fellow Rotary Club of Tucson members. Everyone will be encouraged to take part in some way in our new international service projects. That can be hands-on, planning and logistics, or financial help. If you’ve provided dollars to fund the parties, please consider directing that support toward new international service.

And if you’d like to be involved early in this new beginning, talk with Board member Bruce Tunze or with Matt.

Let’s celebrate that high-note end to our many San Carlos visits represented by the soccer field completion. And let’s work to make our next endeavor to bolster international relations just as successful.
