Due to a family emergency, our scheduled program, Jim Cantrell, Vector Space Systems, is unable to present to the club on Wednesday. In his place, we are delighted to have our very own Club member, Colonel Kent Laughbaum present to us. His program is entitled "Raytheon Support to the American Warrior". Thank you Kent!
Colonel Kent Laughbaum (USAF, ret.) works at Raytheon Missile Systems in the U.S. national security arena, with focus on advanced warfighting concepts and future weapons.
Kent served as an Air Force fighter pilot for 25 years, and was privileged to command the 355th Fighter Wing at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base from 2006 until 2008. He has more than 5,000 hours flying fighters, including over 330 hours in combat over Iraq and Afghanistan.
He is a graduate of Texas A&M University, and holds a post graduate degree from the United States Naval War College.
Kent maintains numerous civic and professional responsibilities including service as the Arizona Public Media Board Chairman, Vice President of the 355th Fighter Association, President of the Texas A&M University Club for Southern Arizona, and member of the Rotary Club of Tucson.
Kent is married to Mary Laughbaum, who works as the Director of Admission and Community Outreach at the Gregory School. They have two married daughters, Christen and Rachel.
Our new EL PRESIDENTE, CLIFF BOWMAN started our meeting right on time.
He presented now PAST PRESIDENT ELLIE PATTERSON with her Past President’s Badge and Rotary Theme Banner. Congrats ELLIE for a very successful 2016-17 Rotary year!
KATHY KITAGAWA gave the Inspiration. DORINNA YORK and KARI MEGER led the members in the Pledge and followed with the Song “America the Beautiful” with GARY HIRSCH accompanying at the piano. JON WANG introduced the guests at the meeting.
Birthday recognitions – JIM LUBINSKI (7/ 2) turned 60 – MARY MARTIN (7/14) and TOM WILLIS (7/15). Happy birthday to you three and thank you for your generous donations.
KEVIN WONG stepped in as Sergeant for FONDA INSLEY, who was stepping in for DALE BERG. KEVIN started off with the Raffle. A huge thank you goes out to all those members who continue to donate items for our semi-monthly Raffle. And, thank you KEVIN for always being there when we need ya!

PROGRAM: PRESIDENT CLIFF covered his trip to the Rotary International Convention, followed by a visit, a Memorial in Atlanta.

#3. Make Tucson Better
The subject of Trees came up and the possibilities of donating Trees for Tucson and ways to accomplish that goal.
After the convention, PRESIDENT CLIFF shared some wonderful pictures of the trip to Scotland with family and the celebration of his son’s marriage while there in Scotland.
PRESIDENT CLIFF toasted to the Rotary Club of Tucson and brought the meeting to a close.
John Strobeck ~ Many of you will recognize John Strobeck as “DJ John,” ……the man responsible for all the great 50’s and 60’s music at our Tucson Classics Car Show for the past 10 years. John provides music for most of the car shows in southern Arizona and some in New Mexico as well. He can be found at Little Anthony’s every other weekend throughout the summer. Now, for the rest of the story…
John was born in Eugene, Oregon, went to college at the University of Oregon and Portland State University. He spent 30 years with IBM in management positions all over the country, including Tucson. In 1992 he established Bright Futures Business Consultants and provided market information to home builders and real estate companies throughout southern Arizona. John is currently a minister with the Mission Valley Church of Christ.
John’s hobbies are 1954 Fords and Pepsi memorabilia. He is married to his wife, Tamra, and has a son, Kevin, who is an officer with the Las Vegas Police Department.

Rotarians around the world suffered a heart-breaking loss this week. Rotary International President Elect Sam Owori died on Thursday from post-operative complications following leg surgery. Current RI President Ian Riseley said in a statement, "Sam was a special person in so many ways, and is a huge loss. From the perspective of Rotary administration, we in Evanston are looking at what needs to be done as a result of Sam's passing. In this time of great loss, I ask you to keep Norah, the Owori family and Sam's millions of friends around the world in your thoughts." Our "Greatest Rotary Club in the Universe" supports many local charitable organizations, some of which you are very familiar with. One of the ones you may not know about is the Southern Arizona Woodturning Association. Among other projects SAWA undertakes is manufacturing wooden pens that are provided to disabled veterans.
This 501(c)(3) group used our support to help them fund a semi-weekly after-school woodturning class for Cragin Elementary 5th graders in the coming school year. Combining SAWA's volunteers with the several donations, students will have an after-school activity that teaches them a skill and introduces them to a hobby/trade that they can use to help others.
