PRESIDENT MARK IRVIN welcomed all to the meeting. We had a moment of silence for Ukraine as well as the unfortunate news of LIZ COHN and CLARKE DUNCAN passing away.

BRANDI HAGA-BLACKMAN, the powerhouse behind Rio Nuevo, led the Pledge and Song “You’re A Grand Ole Flag” with KHRIS DODGE on the keyboard. KYM ADAIR shared some motivational inspiration that concluded with Theodore Roosevelt’s speech “The Man In The Arena.”

KHRIS DODGE introduced our guests of whom there were many.

We enjoyed a nice introductory video by Matt Russell on our speaker Andrew Tang, MD who is the Trauma Medical Director at Banner University Medical Center. Then, Dr. Chad Whelan, CEO of Banner University Medical Center had a few words to say. Banner University has 650 faculty members that train approximately 1,000 students annually. Banner University Medicine, who is the title sponsor of El Tour de Tucson for 2022 and named the primary beneficiary of El Tour’s fundraising goals to be JTED! Next, he introduced Dr. Andy Tang.

Dr. Tang offered a great overview of Banner University’s Trauma Center which is the only Level 1 Trauma Center as recognized by the American College of Surgeons. It’s open 24/7/365, meaning all of the time. The staff dedicates their lives to this. They miss birthdays, kid’s events, holidays, etc. in order to be there and save lives. Trauma is the number one cause of death in people from 1 to 44 years old. It never drops below the number three cause of death in anyone, no matter the age. One third of all trauma deaths are vehicle crashes. Driving a car is the most dangerous thing that most of us do. Be careful, pay attention and wear a seatbelt. The staff at the Trauma Center does a great job and strives to do better. Each week they meet and determine what they could have done differently if they had a negative outcome. Dr. Tang said that though most of the time they execute perfectly, there is sometimes a situation that could have been improved. He talked about the percentage of people who die due to a mistake that a critical caregiver may have made and the importance of training those caregivers (EMTs, Firefighters, etc.) on an ongoing basis. He’s passionate and dedicated to the Trauma Center and we’re lucky to have it as a resource to save lives. Dr. Tang signed the book “Hear Your Heart.”

NINA TRASOFF was celebrating her birthday. She’s a first generation American. Her Dad was from Mariupol, Ukraine. She is the longest acting female member of our club.

PAT LENNAN was celebrating his birthday and did you know he was recognized by the Tucson Police Dept. and Scottsdale Police Dept. for his bravery? He said he was proud to be President MARK’s 3rd grade teacher and was the best three years of his life.

MARGARET HIGGINS announced the 4 Way Test Award. Bob Schlanger, owner of British Car Service, was the recipient. WAYNE PEATE had some nice things to say about Bob. Bob has been involved with JTED since the beginning and is now JTED’s Governing Board Chair. MIKE ANDERSON also highlighted some of Bob’s achievements. It was a well-deserved award and congratulations to Bob!

Sergeant KHRIS pulled the winning 50/50 Raffle price and FAYE MORSE was the winner. She won some cash but not the big prize.

President MARK showed the painting that DIANA MADARAS created for the $5,000 winner of her donation at the Centennial Event last fall. It was a beautiful image of Sabino Canyon. MARK WIERZBINSKI was part of Irv’s Fly-Fishing Fund and was showing off a trout that he caught in his backyard…in Tucson! The Change of Administration party will be at the Mountain Oyster Club on June 18th from 6 to 9pm.  Signups will follow.

Good news, you do not need to register for lunch meetings going forward!
