PRESIDENT CLIFF rang the bell to start the meeting.  ELLEN WHEELER gave the inspiration urging everyone to consider what they spend each day on to make sure what we spend it on is worth the day we sacrifice. WOCKY REDSAR led us in the pledge and song, accompanied by GARY HIRSCH.  MARK SILVERMAN introduced guests and visiting Rotarians

 

We had four Birthday Rotarians. Past President BILL HARLOW called out the Mystery Editor for publishing “fake news”, thereby volunteering to serve as Mystery Editor for the rest of the year (we’ll be in touch, MR. HARLOW!) SHARON LUDWIG, RICK ROSE, and MARK IRVIN each thanked their sponsors and spoke about what Rotary means to them. 

 

PAT ZUMBUSCH recognized the main TCCS Sponsor,  We Buy Houses and owner MIKE ANDERSON and son, Zak. We Buy Houses has donated over $15,000 in support of the Car Show – indispensable to our success!

 

CHARLOTTE HARRIS and her “shady side kick” BOB LOGAN Logan made Paul Harris Presentations to JOE NEVIN, BILL MOORE, and PRESIDENT CLIFF BOWMAN.  Congrats to you three!

 

Sergeant at Arms  DALE BERG recognized JEN HOFFMAN whose firm received both a Better Business Bureau Ethics award and a Copper Cactus Best Place to Work award. For announcements, PRESIDENT CLIFF announced there is no lunch meeting next week, encouraged us to visit the RI Disaster Relief Website, noted the Monthly Social Mixer will be on 10/26 at the Trident II.

Past President SCOTT VAUGHAN introduced today’s program: George Hanson - Director for the Tucson Desert Song Festival which features a theme of "Leonard Bernstein: 100th Birthday". The presentation included a wonderful Performance by: Michelle Perrier – Soprano, Jake Walters – Tenor, and Douglas-Jayd Burn – Piano. Director Hanson signed a book for the Reading Seed Library: “Uni the Unicorn”.

 

PRESIDENT CLIFF closed the meeting with a quote from Tom Petty that the only true magic in the world is music.

The district conference took place 13-15 October at the Doubletree.  We had a great turnout of RCoT Rotarians at the Friday Night Hospitality event and at the conference itself.  Guest speakers included Michael Angelo Caruso, Susan Neuman, Jennifer Jones, and John Matthews, our Zone 25/26 Director.   Breakout sessions included a panel led by Past President Ellie discussing "Women in Rotary" that was well-attended and informative.  President Cliff was on a panel concerning "Successful Literacy Service Projects" as our club has a little bit of experience on the topic.  Saturday afternoon highlighted youth in Rotary - our Interactors, Rotaractors, and exchange students.  Thank you to all that donated to cover the costs of their attendance at the conference!  Sunday morning concluded the conference with a tribute to our district Veterans.  John Matthews, a 20-year Navy veteran, gave a talk concerning core values, and Myron Donald, a member of the Sunrise Club, gave an interesting talk concerning his 5-year captivity as a POW in North Vietnam.

 

~~~ HOSPITALITY NIGHT ~~~

 

The District Foundation Day will be held in Yuma, Arizona on Saturday, November 4th, 2017.  The Foundation Day committee has worked tirelessly to create a program that will enhance your knowledge of what The Rotary Foundation does to bring positive change to our local communities, as well as around the world.

 

Why is it worthwhile for you, and your club members, to take the time and expense to travel to Yuma for Foundation Day?  Participants will have an opportunity to meet with noteworthy Rotarians that will share their experiences and knowledge about how The Rotary Foundation, through its Annual Fund, has provided funds that have helped Rotary Clubs successfully complete service projects that have brought positive change to their communities (see attached flier).  Every Rotarian that participates in Foundation Day will benefit from what these VIP presenters share with them throughout this event.

 

There will be a program on polio survivors and Rotary's efforts to eliminate the threat of polio crippling another child.  The documentary film "Shot Felt Round the World" about the development of the polio vaccine will be shown to remind us why Rotary has worked so hard to eradicate polio.

 

A Recognition Social will be held following the Educational & Team Building program that will recognize Rotarians who have supported, and are continuing to support, our Foundation.

 

As an added bonus, Senior Annual Giving Officer Steven Solomon has offered to meet with club presidents and Foundation chairs on Friday, November 3rd to answer questions, assist, and provide guidance on issues related to the Foundation.

The Association of Fundraising Professionals Southern Arizona Chapter will host its 29th annual National Philanthropy Day Awards luncheon on Friday, November 17, 2017 at The Westin La Paloma. Registration is at 11:00 AM.  Luncheon is from 11:30 a.m. - 1:15 p.m.  Our Rotary Club will be honored at this luncheon and receive one of the five major awards. A film will also be shown that features our Rotary Club in the video. The  ticket cost of the event is $80.00 and a portion of that is tax deductible. We hope many of you will attend and represent the Club and show how supportive Rotary is of community engagement and service. Registration can be made on our website under "Upcoming Events" but your club account will not be billed for the luncheon. Money for your tickets will be collected by Ellie Patterson and checks should be made payable to "So. AZ AFP" (So. AZ Association of Fundraising Professionals).   We have four tables reserved and money needs to be turned in by October 27^th. This is such an honor for our Club. Thank you to former member, Cheryl House, who nominated us for this award.
