PRESIDENT ELLIE called the meeting to order at noon. The Inspiration was done by Rabbi STEPHANIE AARON. Our condolences on the loss of your mother, Rabbi. JIM WOOD led the pledge and the song, "It's a Grand Ole Flag". Birthdays were celebrated by HUGH THOMPSON, SUZANNE LAWDER, JIM WOOD, and SHARYN FELTON. Then SID HIRSH introduced our newest member JAMES JOHNSTON who runs Performance Footwear in Williams Addition on Broadway. JAMES spoke glowingly about his store and its staff. Sergeant at Arms FONDA INSLEY had an easy day with no fines, no raffle and no auction. LISA FOGLE reminded us about the 8/31 Mixer which is a replacement meeting for our lunch meeting. All must sign up on Clubrunner. BOB SHAFF presented a Blue Badge to TOM WILLIS, CHARLOTTE HARRIS talked about The Rotary Foundation and the Ride to End Polio, and STEVE PICKERING thanked TERESA LIVERZANI-BAKER for getting her employer Transwest Properties, to be a major backer of the Car Show.
PAT ZUMBUSCH introduced our speaker, Dr. Pearce Paul Creasman, Associate Professor and Curator of the U of A Egyptian Expedition. Dr. Creasman outlined some really interesting discoveries from the “New Kingdom” period. He also stated that based on numerous lines of evidence, there are at least two chambers hidden behind the painted walls of King Tut’s Tomb. He’s hopeful they contain lots of treasure!
PRESIDENT ELLIE adjourned the meeting with a toast.
As I was reading the most recent Rotarian that came in the mail this past week, I thought about how much I enjoy the letters to the editor. The last one in this edition from Rotarian Drake of Tadworth, England, titled Membership perks really perked me up. He spoke about the importance of weekly club meetings where members have the opportunity to network, create good business relationships and share ideas.
Each week at our club we have a variety of speakers who inform us, educate us, engage us and challenge us. Just think of last week’s program with Professor Creasman and what we learned from his Egyptian expeditions. And to think they are supporting a literacy program teaching hieroglyphics.
The camaraderie enjoyed around each table, the connections made and good conversation shared rejuvenates us. We share updates on our work projects, small ones and the larger signature event that requires all hands on deck. This, combined with all the laughter and high energy in the room before we even get to our tables, makes our weekly meetings something we look forward to. Laughter swells and subsides as the meetings are adjourned and Rotary friends wave goodbye to each other with "I'll see you next week" and a parting smile.
On August 31st, when we meet for our mixer as a replacement meeting at El Molinito, (2323 N. Pantano) starting at 5:30 pm, we’ll see each other then, and this event will give us an even greater opportunity to meet members in a casual and fun atmosphere. Bring a guest too, and let them experience fun-loving, hardworking and dedicated Rotarians inspiring each other in a relaxed style of meeting.
