Stories
First Tee Tucson ~ Building Game Changers
We build experiences that build character.  We exist to enable kids to build the strength of character that empowers them through a lifetime of new challenges. By seamlessly integrating the game of golf with life skills curriculum, we create learning experiences that build inner strength, self-confidence, and resilience that kids carry to everything they do.

With the belief that all kids deserve the chance to grow in a supportive environment with mentors guiding them, we are dedicated to building programs that are accessible, welcoming, and as impactful as they are fun.

Judy McDermott ~ Biography

Originally from Whittier, California Judy McDermott has played golf since the age of 8. Judy has been blessed to spend her entire career in sports.  After receiving a B.A. from UCLA as a member of the women’s golf team, McDermott spent her early career in sports and event management in Los Angeles. Prior to moving to Tucson, she managed LPGA golf tournaments in California.

In 1992 McDermott moved to Tucson after being recruited to join the Tucson Conquistadores in management of the Tucson Open, PGA TOUR event. McDermott has been a part of PGA TOUR golf and the Tucson Conquistadores for close to 30 years.

On October 26th, McDermott transitioned to full time executive director of First Tee Tucson to pursue her lifelong passion of making an impact with our community's youth.

McDermott was inducted into the Pima County Sports Hall of Fame in 2015 and received the Women of Influence Non-Profit Champion Award in 2017.

She currently serves as Vice Chair of Beacon Group Board of Directors, a member and past president of Women at the Top, member of the City of Tucson Greens Committee and member of the Pima County Sports Hall of Fame Selection Committee.
Social Mixer ~ A Huge Success!
Our Social Mixer held on Wednesday evening at Three Canyon Backyard Garden Gill was a huge success!  With COVID restrictions, we had 55 who attended.  Lots of fun, food and drink was had by all.  What a great outdoor venue.  A huge shout out to Bruce Jacobs for his work on finding this venue and working out the details for this social mixer.  Thanks Bruce!!!!

Inner Peace Workshop ~ 11/7/20
Fellow Rotarians:

District Peace Committee Members, Joe Daniszewski, Aimee Graves and I are inviting you to join us for a Morning of Peace presented virtually on November 7th , 9 am – 12 pm. As described in our recent District Newsletter.

Inner peace (or peace of mind) refers to a deliberate state of psychological or spiritual calm despite the potential presence of stressors.  Being "at peace" is considered by many to be a state in which our mind performs at an optimal level with a positive outcome. But people have difficulties embracing their inner spirituality because everyday stressors get the best of them; finding peace and happiness in the little joys of life can seem difficult, and results do not seem all that gratifying. With everything that’s going on in the world right now, we can’t think of a better time to offer a workshop than a peace-related workshop like this. After all, doesn’t everyone want peace or find ways for a more peaceful life?

On November 7, 2020, the Center for Community Dialogue will professionally guide us through a workshop to help us understand why Inner Peace is so hard to find and keep and how to better manage Inner Peace.

Please go to www.rotaryd5500.org to register. We’d love to see you there!

Peace to all.

#runningforrotary
My fellow Rotarians,

I have laced up my running shoes and started #runningforrotary. I usually run 12-18 miles per week or 48-72 miles per month. You can find a form on our website www.tucsonrotary.org, under the “Member Area” tab, top right corner of the home page, or request one from Dorinna or Kari. You can sponsor me mile for mile for a month, a few months or the entire year. Your donations will go to the area of your choice for our Rotary Club Foundation or even Rotary International. How far do you think I will go #runningforrotary this year?  I would like to thank those members who have already signed up and pledged a donation.

Thank you for your support,

President Jen
