Envisioning a World Without Barriers to Higher Education
For too many students, higher education feels financially out of reach. Outstanding student loan debt in the United States in 2017 was around $1.42 trillion and the average student loan balance for 2016 graduates was $37,172, up 6% from 2015.  Especially when combined with a lack of a degree, student loan debt impedes economic mobility for a lifetime. An innovative, new approach to financial aid distribution is needed, not just to increase the post-secondary education completion rate of students, but to provide access to higher education to individuals from diverse economic backgrounds. Earn to Learn is a promising solution that is addressing many of the issues facing low- to moderate- income students and families in Arizona. Combining student savings with scholarships, financial education, and success coaching, Earn to Learn helps LMI students obtain a college degree and graduate ready to enter the workforce with little to no student loan debt.

Kate Hoffman ~ Biography

Kate Hoffman is the executive director and founder of Earn to Learn, a nonprofit that empowers low- to moderate- income students to successfully complete college by providing matched-savings grants, personal finance training, and workforce readiness. Hoffman founded the organization to help LMI students and their families close the opportunity gap by investing in their own education. She worked to facilitate a collaboration between Arizona's three public universities, the Arizona Board of Regents, high schools, community colleges, and financial service providers to launch Earn to Learn in 2013. Earn to Learn operates one of the largest and most successful individual development account programs in the country. Students who income-qualify save $500 per academic year. These funds are matched 8:1, bringing their total scholarship award to $4,500. Combining student savings with scholarships, financial education, and success coaching, Earn to Learn helps LMI students obtain a college degree and graduate ready to enter the workforce with little to no student loan debt. Prior to launching Earn to Learn, Hoffman worked in the financial services sector managing over $100 million in assets. The crisis in higher education inspired her to focus her boundless energy on helping LMI students and their families have every opportunity to achieve the dream of a college education by eliminating barriers, building financial assets and creating pathways out of poverty.
Mystery Editor ~ 5/16/18
Past President JIM LUBINSKI gave the inspiration, and new member BILL KOUBA led us in the Pledge and Song, the "Star-Spangled Banner", accompanied by GARY HIRSCH on the piano. ALICE MILTON once again introduced our guests and visiting Rotarians.

We had a total of four Birthday Rotarians including:

  • KEN TUCKER, leader of the Boy Scouts of America – Catalina Council who is welcoming his son back from a naval tour in the Persian Gulf.
  • NINA TRASOFF, one of the first two female members of our Club, whose Rotary pride grows with every year.
  • PAT LENNAN, “Mr. Education”, who defined aging as going from lying about your age to bragging about it.
  • … and Past President SCOTT VAUGHAN who recently participated in the award of Honor Roll scholarships to 170 8th Graders.

Past Presidents ARNIE JACOBSEN and CHARLOTTE HARRIS ably stood in for our missing president elect elect to award Paul Harris Fellowships to the following Rotarians:

  • SHARON LUDWIG received her first Paul Harris.
  • CHRIS MOONEY received his Paul Harris plus one and surprised his mother Mary Parnell with a Paul Harris.
  • TOM MCQUILLEN received his Paul Harris plus three.
  • DOT KRET received her Paul Harris plus three.
  • PETER BEAHAN received his Paul Harris plus three.

DREW VACTOR then took the podium to present this year’s 4 WAY TEST AWARD to Sam R. Levitz. Mr. Levitz lives the qualities of the test in his day to day management of his business, as evident in the senior employees who’ve worked for decades at the firm, and in his support of numerous charities around Tucson, including Tu Nidito, Blocks for Beds, and Big Brothers Big Sisters.  He also donates to the club’s Tucson Classics Car Show.  Congratulations Sam and thank you for all you do for the Tucson community!

Sergeant at Arms DALE BERG swiftly moved us through the announcements:

  • JOHN LEWIS reminded us of the social mixer on May 30th at Chuy’s.
  • …and IRENE DECKER presented a Blue Badge to ALICE MILTON. Welcome Alice!!

NINA TRASOFF introduced our presentation: David Ivers, Artistic Director for the Arizona Theater Company. Mr. Ivers thanked “Dreamboat CLIFF who flies A10’s” for the opportunity to speak at Rotary, and noted that a community is measured by its curiosity, especially the questions its theater asks. He spoke also about the ATC’s exciting upcoming season as well as its extensive education programs – including the Arizona Arts Initiative, home grown writers’ programs, and Veterans’ Playwriting programs.

President CLIFF closed the meeting with a toast wishing the Arizona Theater Company great success in the coming year.
New Member Spotlight - Scott Ehrsam
Scott Ehrsam is the owner of Home Instead Senior Care serving the greater Metro Tucson area and surrounding communities, incl. Green Valley, Oro Valley, Marana and Vail.  Home Instead has provided thousands of clients with in-home care in their 22 plus years in business.  Scott credits his success to his phenomenal team and his company values that align very well with the Rotary Four-Way Test.

Scott spent his early childhood in Omaha Nebraska.  When Scott was being delivered in the hospital, his 4 year old sister was already in the hospital being treated for Polio in her left arm.  Despite the challenges, she recently retired from a stellar career in Human Resources.  Scott's family moved to Tucson in 1969 when he was 9 yrs old.  He is a graduate of Palo Verde High School where he was the Student Body President and lettered in football and track.

After spending a year at Lake Forest College north of Chicago, where they received over 120 inches of snow, he couldn't get back to Tucson quick enough.  Putting himself through college, much of the time working in the banquet department of the Doubletree Hotel where Rotary meets, he eventually graduated from the UofA and the Eller Entrepreneurship Program where he partnered with his Rotary sponsor Sean Furrier.  He has two grown children; Shane, a successful manager in the NY metro area and Kelsey, an R.N. living in San Diego.  He enjoys hiking, mountain biking and touring on his motorcycle.

He is looking forward to serving the community alongside his fellow Rotarians.  So make sure to introduce yourself to Scott Ehrsam and welcome him into the club!

RCOT Past President's Dinner

On Saturday May 5,, 2018 Jim and Connie Murphy and Roger and Jeri Harwell hosted a Rotary Club of Tucson Past Presidents dinner and evening at the Harwell’s lovely home.  Twenty one Past Presidents and a number of spouses attended the Cinco De Mayo fiesta. Mexican food & beer were enjoyed while a special collection of Roger’s Mexican music played in the background. A unique white sangria, concocted by Jeri, using Marianne’s recipe was one of the “hits” of the evening. Unfortunately, Marianne was out of town and could not judge the quality, but everyone who imbibed attested to its terrific flavor and potency.  Bob Shaff provided videos of four past presidents that have been recorded talking about the special events that happened during their presidency and offering advice for future presidents.  The four selected for the evening were Don Shropshire, Bob Shaff, Roger Harwell and Jim Murphy.  The project was the idea of past president John McCaleb and Bob and Rick Rose have worked on it for a number of years.  There was great fellowship and tales of the past and Jim Lubinski was on his hunt for car show ticket sale Captains.

RCOT Hiking Mt. Lemmon
The RCOT Hiking Group had a great turnout for the first hike on Mt. Lemmon.  The group completed the Marshall Gulch/Aspen Loop hike of 4.5 miles with 900 feet in elevation gain.  It was a beautiful day and with great company.

In attendance, Ted Forsberg, Mike Schulte, Rich Flynn, friend of Rotary Nancy Bowman, Bruce "Kilroy" Richardson and lovely bride Martha.  Not pictured are Bill Kouba and wife Jillian.  Anyone interested in joining the group on a hike, contact Bruce Richardson or Chuck Sawyer.
