We would like to introduce you to the first African American Museum in Southern Arizona. Our mission is to share and educate the community about the impactful stories, images, and artifacts as we document, digitize, and preserve African American and Black life, culture, and history in Southern Arizona. Our vision is to serve as a resource and to provide the community with an applied and virtual venue and repository for stories, histories, and cultural contributions by African Americans and Blacks in Southern Arizona. We also want to share and support social justice issues that have been historically a challenge for African Americans. I will share a information that we have on our website and at the museum.
Beverely Elliott — A Life of Service, Education, and Community Leadership
Originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan, Beverely Elliott has built a life dedicated to education, service, and community advocacy. A proud alumna of Pima Community College, she went on to earn her undergraduate degree from the University of Arizona and a Master’s Degree from Prescott College.
Beverely’s multifaceted career includes roles as a health care professional, educator, counselor, wife, mother, humanitarian, and community activist. With a professional background in school counseling and psychology, she has served as a graduate counseling advisor at the University of Arizona, the University of Phoenix, and Prescott College. She is also a member of the American School Counselors Association.
Beverely is a former officer and active member of the National Basketball Wives Association (NBWA), an active member of The Tucson Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, and has served on the executive board of the Elliott Accounting Group and the U of A Community Council for Student Success.
Beverely also serves on the advisory board of the African American Cultural and Historic Museum of Washtenaw County and was recently inducted into Las Donas de Tucson. She currently sits on the University of Arizona Board of Trustees.
In her most passionate role to date, Beverely serves as the volunteer Executive Director and co-founder of the African American Museum of Southern Arizona, where she continues to uplift and preserve African American and Black history and culture in the region.
Robert A. (Bob) Elliott - President/Owner, Elliott Accounting
Bob is founder and President of Elliott Accounting, an accounting, tax, and management advisory services firm. He is currently the Chair of the Board of the African American Museum of Southern Arizona. He has served as the Chairman of the Board of UNS Energy-Fortis, the NBA Retired Players Association, AAA Mountain West Group, AAA Auto Club Partners, AAA Arizona, Tucson Airport Authority, the Tucson Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, the University of Arizona Alumni Association and the Tucson Urban League. He is currently serving as a board member of ITC Holdings of Michigan, the University of Arizona Eller College of Business, and the University of Arizona Black Community Council; and formerly served as a board member of the University of Arizona Foundation, AAA CSAA Insurance, Southern Arizona Community Bank, the Tucson Black Chamber of Commerce, YMCA, Tucson Medical Center Health Enterprises, Tucson Medical Center Foundation, and the Greater Tucson Economic Council. Mr. Elliott is a member of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, and is a NAACP Life Member. In 2014 he was named the Tucson Man of the Year.
Bob co-authored a book in 2014 titled “Tucson, a Basketball Town.” He enjoyed a 27 year broadcasting analyst career for professional basketball teams such as the Phoenix Suns and for NCAA Division I basketball on radio and television. In addition, he has voice credits with EA Sports for the computer interactive games NBA Live 2003, NBA Live 2002, NBA Live 2001 and NBA Street. He played professional basketball in the National Basketball Association for the New Jersey Nets from 1978-81, and participated in the 1976 U.S. Olympic Trials. Mr. Elliott was a College Basketball Athletic and Academic All American, and he is the only University of Arizona athlete to be a member of the College Academic All America Hall of Fame.
PRESIDENT DOT welcomed us to the meeting and we enjoyed a Hawaiian themed lunch. Then, she introduced new member ROB SAME for the pledge and song. ROB owns a transportation courier service, Rob's Elite Deliveries, LLC. GARY HIRSCH played a great rendition of “You’re A Grand Ole Flag.”
DOT then let us know of some sad news and we had a few moments of thought: JOHN STROBECK’s health is deteriorating and going to assisted living in Nevada to be near his son. MONTE CLAUSEN is recovering from a foot infection and still has a couple of months of rehab. We also thought about DON ROLLINGS and his beloved wife Nan who recently passed.
CAMI EVANS offered the inspiration based on Kindness. Remember to be kind and you never know how much it might matter to someone. She’s grateful that we’ve been so kind as she gets to know our membership.
DAN KALM has graduated from a cast to a boot for his foot recovery and introduced visiting Rotarians and guests. PRESIDENT DOT welcomed those members who were visiting online to include JOE PENNINGTON and his wife Mickey as well as DORINNA YORK who is in Fools Hollow Lake.
PRESIDENT DOT thanked TIM GRAUNKE and his company Solar Gain for the cookie sponsorship and awarded him a coveted Cookie Monster.
PAT ZUMBUSCH introduced our speaker Marie Fordney who we first met when they worked together at the Community Food Bank. Marie has been advocating for children for almost her entire career and has been the Executive Director of Children’s Advocacy Center of So. AZ for the past sevem years. The Children’s Advocacy Center is the front line responder to child abuse and related events. The majority of abuse is sexual abuse in our community (57%) with physical abuse (22%), domestic violence and kidnapping (18%) taking up the other majority pieces. 7,000 children in Pima County are abused each year. Without treatment, they are 4 to 12 times more likely to become alcoholics, drug abusers as well as become depressed and/or attempt suicide. They are also more likely to become morbidly obese and contract STD’s. 50% of the Center is dedicated to prevention by training those that work with children (teachers, counselors, etc.). We can help! Become a Steward of Children and learn to recognize the signs that a child may be being groomed before the abuse has taken place and how to help avoid circumstances that may leave the child at risk. We can also help by donating money and/or participating in the annual fundraising Golf Tournament that is happening on September 28th. Log on to CACSOAZ.org for more information. Marie did a very heartfelt and passionate presentation that included a few tears. It’s great that they have her as their leader of such an important center. She signed the book “Dandi McLion Has Her Say!”
DAVE WHITE was celebrating his birthday. Did you know he makes very large machine parts for equipment all over the world? He said there are two things that he loves: All of us and that the people in this club are passionate about making our world better.
MITCH PISIK introduced our new member ROB SAME. ROB was born in Cameroon. His wife, Elvira, still lives in Cameroon and hopefully she’ll be able to be with him in the USA soon. Among many things, he has been a professional ballroom dancer in the past. ROB owns a courier service and can deliver things all over Southern Arizona to include Phoenix.
We had four Blue Badges presented at our meeting:
BRUCE TUNZE gave ROGER LaFAYE his blue badge. ROGER works with Micamp Solutions and they do good work with credit card processing. He’s also already brought in four members!
RICK ROSE gave KASPER KAVALARIS his blue badge. KASPER recently purchased Film Creations and is ready for more work.
CLIFF BOWMAN gave KEVIN BARKER his blue badge. KEVIN is the VP at Lovitt & Touche. KEVIN played football for Syracuse University and beat the U of Arizona in 1990, 28-0. It’s a good thing that his daughter goes to the U of A now.
PHIL GUTT gave CLARK GODING his blue badge. CLARK is an accountant and enjoys creating model railways as a hobby.
DAN KALM drew the winning number for the 25/50/25 Raffle. There’s close to $1,800 in the pot and the winning card was NOT drawn.
ART ALLIS was recognized for winning the Bill Sweet Member of Distinction award from Skål. Skål is a professional tourism organization that functions around the world.

UNFORTUNATELY, THIS WEEK SAW 3 NEW CASES OF WILD POLIO TYPE 1 (WPV1) SO OUR COUNT YEAR-TO-DATE HAS INCREASED TO 19, (2 IN AFGHANISTAN AND 17 IN PAKISTAN). THIS COMPARES TO 18 FOR THE SAME PERIOD IN 2024. THERE WAS ALSO 1 POSITIVE ENVIRONMENTAL SAMPLE (ES) COLLECTED FROM PAKISTAN.

Senegal and Mauritania Introduce Hexavalent Vaccines
Senegal and Mauritania have taken a major step forward in protecting children by introducing the hexavalent vaccine into their national immunization schedules. This new six-in-one vaccine adds the inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) to the pentavalent vaccine (diphtheria, tetanus, whole-cell pertussis, hepatitis B, and Haemophilus influenzae type b), reducing the number of shots children need. This is a game changer for children’s health as countries can not only protect children more effectively but also strengthen the fight against polio.
As we are beyond the halfway point of this year's Summer Hiking Series and as the always favorite, hike out of Marshall Gulch ended up being cancelled, next month seems like the perfect time to complete this moderate trek, that appeals to so many. For this trip, we will be reversing directions and beginning on Lower Aspen, taking a break at the Saddle and descending back to the starting point on the Marshall Gulch trail. Total distance is 4.1 miles with less than 900 feet of vertical gain and will take around 2.5 hours to complete.
Meet and departure will be from LeBuzz, located on Catalina Highway and Tanque Verde with a meet time of 6:30AM, departure at 6:45AM and anticipated hike start at 8AM. Upon completion of this beautiful stroll through the forest, conversation and tasty treats will be follow at Beyond Bread, located at the Mount Lemmon Lodge.

Please join your fellow Rotarians for a morning of community service and camaraderie! Last year, we proudly adopted Oracle Road between River and Wetmore and completed seven successful cleanup days.
There is a sign posted on Oracle telling the community that RCOT is caring for this road. It is on a pole toward the end of the bridge, covering the wash-East side, going North.
Our mission: to remove litter and debris from the roadside and adjacent areas (note: we do not enter the wash).
We’ll provide grabbers, safety vests, trash bags, and basic gloves—but feel free to bring your own gloves for comfort.

A hat or head covering
Closed-toed shoes
Lots of energy
A great attitude
This is a fun and meaningful way to give back to our community and help keep Tucson beautiful. We hope to see you there!

The Rotary Club of Tucson Cycling Fellowship will start up once again. The dates are November 8th and November 15th. The Ride starts 8 AM at the St Philips Plaza Campbell and River on the South side near the REN coffee shop. We will ride the loop going West. The ride is for all riders of any ability and the pace and distance is entirely up to the rider. This ride is meant to be a fun training ride in preparation for the El Tour de Tucson. Riders should wear Rotary jerseys if possible.
You all should have received the email from the Rotary Office with the Parking Protocols at the TCC. In order for us to continue to receive the complimentary parking, you will need to supply your Name and License Plate Number to kate.calhoun@tucsonaz.gov. When sending your information, please reference that you are a member of the Rotary Club of Tucson. After she has recorded your number into the system, you will not be charged for parking at the TCC going forward. If you have a guest attending a lunch meeting, please inform them they will need to validate their license plate number by stopping by the Guest Services Office inside the glass meeting room doors. Also, if you are driving a different car then the one you supplied information for, you too will need to stop by the Guest Services Office. Please remember to bring your License Plate Number with you when you leave your car.
