KEVIN SUMLIN – HEAD COACH, ARIZONA FOOTBALL

Kevin Sumlin, a three-time national Coach of the Year finalist, was named Arizona’s 32nd head coach on Jan. 14, 2018.

Sumlin came to Arizona after serving as the head football coach at Texas A&M University for the past six seasons (2012-17), compiling a 51-26 record including three bowl victories. He also served as the head coach at the University of Houston for four seasons (2008-11), amassing a 35-17 record. In his 10 seasons as a head coach prior to Arizona, Sumlin compiled an 86-43 record and his teams played in bowl games in nine of those seasons.

Sumlin's coaching career has also seen stops at his alma mater Purdue (1998-2001), Minnesota (1993-97) and Wyoming (1991-92).

Sumlin has coached in 16 bowl games, including all four traditional New Year's Day games.

A four-year letterman as a linebacker at Purdue from 1983-86, Sumlin finished his career as one of the top tacklers in Boilermaker history. He was named to Sports Illustrated's All-America walk-on list as a freshman after leading Purdue with 91 tackles.

He earned honorable mention All-Big Ten honors as a senior, while ranking fifth in the league with 114 tackles, and helped lead Purdue to the Peach Bowl.

The Indianapolis native graduated from Purdue in 1988 with a bachelor's degree in both criminology and criminal justice. Sumlin has four children: daughters Courtney and Shelby, and sons Jackson and Joey.

Enjoy fun in the sun, fellowship, great speakers and breakout sessions at the 2019 Destination District Conference while cruising down to Ensenada, Mexico on the ship “Inspiration.” We sail from beautiful Long Beach, CA to Ensenada, B.C., Mexico, departing Friday, October 25th at 6:30 pm and returning Monday at 7:00 am October 28th, 2019.   Experience the internationality of Rotary while working side by side with fellow Rotarians both from our District and District 4100 including Rotaractors on a service project.

Our service project will be helping to renovate and restore a neglected Youth Center for mentally and emotionally challenged children in the local area so that more children can attend this Center. Right now there’s a waiting list. Cleaning, painting, general construction clean-up will all be a part of the work of many hands. There will be 4 crews from which to choose your favorite type of work. And if you would rather go shopping and touring the lovely Ensenada area, that’s an option also. The service project should be completed in about 3 hours and after that the buses will take us to a vineyard where we will have a delicious lunch and do a bit of wine-tasting while enjoying fellowship with local Rotarians. We’ll return to the ship around 4:00 pm.

Ocean breezes, great food (24 hours a day), evening strolls on the deck with a gorgeous Baja moon overhead, renewing old friendships and making new acquaintances, what could be better? The deposit is $100.  Ocean view cabins are $454-$484 and inside cabins are $404-$409. This reasonable price for the entire trip is all-inclusive. (alcoholic beverages not included).

See you on board the Inspiration! Reserve your stateroom today by emailing fellow Rotarian Mike Sloan: mike@cruiseconnections.com or call him at 800-248-7447 or 336-659-9772. He’s very helpful and planned the District Conference Cruise for us in 2008 which Rotarians still talk about. You can also contact me for additional information: ellie@thetempconnection.com
