Brent Brennan is the next Head Coach of Arizona Football. Brennan joins the Wildcats following seven seasons leading the San José State University football program where he steered the Spartans to three bowl game appearances and earned the 2020 Mountain West Coach of the Year award.
Brennan, 50, is an experienced leader in college football who enjoyed two stints coaching under legendary Arizona head coach Dick Tomey, the winningest coach in program history. The San José native first learned under Tomey with the Wildcats as a graduate assistant in 2000, and again from 2005-09 at SJSU as an assistant coach. The ties between Brennan and the University of Arizona run deep, with Brent’s brother Bradley playing five years as a wide out in Tucson under Tomey, and Brent’s wife Courtney being an alumna of the University.
Among a multitude of accomplishments at San José State, Brennan became the first head coach in SJSU history to lead the Spartans to three bowl games in a four-year span. He also steered SJSU to back-to-back winning seasons in 2022 and 2023, marking the first time it had been accomplished by the Spartans since the 1991-92 campaigns. Throughout Brennan’s lengthy and accomplished career, he helped develop five All-Americans and 19 Professional Football players, including six who enjoyed NFL careers of five-plus seasons.
Brennan and his wife Courtney are the proud parents to two daughters, Blake and Casey, and one son, Scott.
PRESIDENT MARGARET HIGGINS started off the meeting by introducing new member MICHAEL LEVIN who led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and “God Bless America”.
PRESIDENT MARGARET led us in a moment of silence for the passing of long-time member JACK PARRIS who passed away at 90 years old on 3/7/24. Rotarian Reverend Needham also passed away. PAT ZUMBUSCH is recovering from surgery, please reach out to him and let him know you are thinking of him.
Today our inspiration was from JOE DANISZEWSKI. He reminded us that it was Spring and the desert wildflowers are glorious this time of year. And spring is eternal and brings hope. He also challenged us to do something today to create hope for someone.
SAA DAN KALM reminded everyone of all the amazing service projects and fellowships we have had this past month. He also introduced us to all our guests.
PAST PRESIDENT eventually introduced our keynote speaker after he shamelessly plugged his book and read his “humorous” Chat GPT intro of PRESIDENT MARGARET.
Today’s program featured Dr. Eduardo Blanco, Associate Professor at the University of Arizona “Are Computers as smart as you think? Dr Blanco talked to us about technology and that despite rapid advancements, the computers of yesteryear still have the same computing abilities of the computers of today…. They may just be a lil bit slower. Also, computers do not have common sense and when posed questions with obvious answers the technology struggles with these basic human qualities… May we all have leisurely uphill bike rides. It seems like our jobs are safe for the time being.
We celebrated three birthdays today; DOT KRET who shared her birthday rap with us. BOB MORKEN, who apparently had to clean a lot of toilets. DON ROLLINGS who as quarterback for his middle school football team led them to a 0-7-1 season, but in the end lifelong friendships were won. Happy birthday!!

Passage 7 is such a gorgeous example of the lower Sonoran Desert in bloom for the spring. The Rotary Club turned out 11 volunteers to help with brushing and drain installation ahead of the Vail Scramble in April. We managed to remove encroaching vegetation, brush 0.6 miles of trail and installed 13 brand new drains to help with trail erosion. We also opened up about 20 drains or natural washes that were already existing.
This group was great to work with and took direction well, with a quick learning curve on how to build an effective drain. Even the weather cooperated with the event, remaining overcast and warm. We saw about 10 through hikers, numerous bikers, including Neil Stitzer, and a group of pack mules! Busy trail day!
Thank you to Chuck Sawyer for reaching out and helping initiate this event and I look forward to working with them in the future.

(Flexible timing; folks can stay or go as they wish)
Cost: $12 Per Person
Come out for a tour of the museum, a demonstration of neon sign making, a quiz answering contest. Meet afterwards at Floras Market for those that can continue the fun and fellowship!
Rotary Club of Tucson is sponsoring an all-inclusive Rotarian service project Saturday April 13, 2024 at the Triangle Y YMCA Ranch Camp from 8:30AM-1:00PM. The Annual Rotary Days Service Project is open to all Rotarians and friends of Rotarians and families. There are jobs for all age groups and skill levels. Generally, we help spruce up the Ranch for the incoming summer camp session that begins in June. In the past, we have painted cabins, stained wood beams, assembled and painted picnic tables, trimmed brush, painted the bathrooms, performed some small masonry work, and general clean up.
Registration is Saturday morning 8:00-8:30 AM at the Ranch. Please register at this link:https://rotaryd5500.org/event/rcot-service-project-at-triangle-y-ranch-camp/ . A free lunch will be served at 1:00PM. Come for several hours or stay for just an hour. This is a good chance to mingle with Rotarians from all over Tucson. It is a great way to introduce Rotary to your friends and neighbors. Please bring gloves, sunscreen and a water bottle.
Our Home Hospitality events are scheduled for the week of April 21st through the 27th and we are looking for members to host during the week. These social events will replace our Wednesday, April 24th lunch meeting. If you are interested in hosting a small or large group at your home, place of business or even at a restaurant, please let Dorinna know the date, time, location and the amount of guests you will host.
