Sharon Megdal will draw on her 25+ years of experience working on our region’s water issues to provide an overview of both our successes and challenges. One of the challenges we face is that people don’t show much interest in water management so long as water comes out the tap cleanly and reliably. How do we educate and engage the public when things are good in order to make sure we have the water future we want? This question was the foundation of the two-part project “Beyond the Mirage”. Beyond the Mirage is both a documentary about water in the Colorado River Basin and a dynamic platform for learning. The project involved filmmaker Cody Sheehy and his team, UA Water Resources Research Center personnel, and Arizona Public Media. It involved filming throughout the Lower Colorado River Basin and in Israel. This presentation will include some film clips from Beyond the Mirage and offer insights from Sharon’s locally, national, and international work, including her responsibilities as a member of the Central Arizona Project board. Because she will have only 20 minutes to speak and answer questions about a very big topic, she is happy to accept questions and comments in advance by email (smegdal@email.arizona.edu).
Sharon B. Megdal is Director of The University of Arizona Water Resources Research Center (WRRC), an Extension and research unit in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Her work focuses on water policy and management, on which she writes and frequently speaks. The geographic scope of Dr. Megdal’s work ranges from local to international. She is the lead editor of Shared Borders, Shared Waters: Israeli-Palestinian and Colorado River Basin Water Challenges and a book on water recharge and has authored many other publications.
Current professional service activities include the following: President-Elect of the board of the Universities Council on Water Resources (UCOWR); Board Member, International Arid Lands Consortium; and Board Member, American Water Resources Association (AWRA). She is co-chairing an international conference on water, which will be held in Tel Aviv, Israel in September 2017.
Sharon also is an elected public official. In November 2014, she was elected by the residents of Pima County, Arizona to a second six-year term on Board of Directors for the Central Arizona Water Conservation, also known as the Central Arizona Project (CAP). Sharon has been elected by her colleagues to serve as Secretary of the Board. Sharon has served on numerous Arizona boards and commissions, including the Arizona Corporation Commission, the State Transportation Board and the Arizona Medical Board. She holds a Ph.D. degree in Economics from Princeton University and an A. B. degree in Economics from Douglass College of Rutgers University.

In every part of the world, routine immunization is as crucial as ever to ensure that all children have the best chance at a healthy future.”
Club Leadership Assembly is coming to Tucson on May 20th. These assemblies are required for incoming Club Presidents and Secretaries, important for all incoming officers, and also useful for all Rotarians including new and long-time members.

Tucson Rotary's monthlySocial Mixer is scheduled for April 27th, 5:30 pm-7:30 pm and again will be held at the very popular Trident II, located in Plaza Palomino, 2900 N. Swan. Last month's mixer brought members and guests together for a very enjoyable evening out. Bring a family member, a potential new member, a friend and your business cards. This will be a great time to socialize, network, and enjoy the fellowship and fun of Rotary. No reservations or registrations necessary. (no host bar)
RCOT has a long history of doing service projects at the Triangle Y YMCA Ranch Camp for many years. Some of our more senior members have great memories of their own camp experience many years ago. Just ask PP Bill Harlow. This year’s Day of Service was one of the best. The Ranch is owned and operated by the YMCA of Tucson and provides a week of camp experience to all levels of disadvantaged kids and is a very busy place during the summer months. This is the third year in a row for performing a Day of Service at the Ranch and two years ago, the Camp Director Chip Hutler suggested we take advantage of the Lodge facilities ($35PP) they lease out to groups of all sorts and spend Friday night before getting up early on Saturday to a hearty breakfast and begin our service project.
Thanks to Darrell Stewart who has coordinated and cooked a great steak BBQ on Friday night the past two years. This year’s dinner was his best as he brought that incredible microwave for very tasty snacks before dinner. After a few stories and a great dinner we relaxed around the grille and spent a nice night in our “deluxe” accommodations! It is a great opportunity for our family Rotarians with kids or grandkids to come out and have some fun and participate in our service project. Brett Stein brought his two munchkins who had a blast and helped stain the new picnic tables that our Club President Ellie and some members helped purchase. We raised enough money for 13 new tables.
We were joined by about 10 of our Amphi HS Interact Club members who helped stain and paint the picnic tables in super record time, along with some members who liked the shady aspects of that job. We were also joined by members of our University Rotaract Club who painted the interiors of several cabins. Mark Irvin and members of his illustrious supper club showed up in force and helped paint an entire complex in record time. Marshall Dennington was the painter and Mark and friends were the helpers. PDG Ernie Montagne got even with the tree that hurt him a bit last year. Newer member Tom Willis and PP Jon Wang and Dan Guare ripped out a bunch of brush and trees from the Lodge room areas. We had a successful day and the maintenance manager looks forward to our Club coming out every year. While it was a tough weekend with Easter, we managed to get 35 volunteers out to perform a number of projects. Next year’s 3rd Annual Day of Service will once again include a sleep over option and BBQ steak dinner and we hope to increase the amount of work projects. Thanks to all who contributed and/or came out to help. The Ranch is a tidier place.
