We love to dance. We love to teach. Come see us dance!
At the Maguire Academy of Irish Dance, students get a chance to learn from some of the best dancers in the world. There are currently four schools located in Tucson, Phoenix, Dallas and Houston. Over the years, Darren Maguire has gathered a highly-skilled staff that has performed at some of the world’s largest stages.
The Maguire Academy of Irish Dance is a committed team that:
Strives toward excellence, while celebrating the joy of dance and competition.
Cultivates creative leaders, mentors, and cultural ambassadors.
Provides a safe, fun, and friendly environment for children to learn Irish Dance and form lasting friendships.
Celebrate Irish culture and heritage.
Darren Maguire, ADCRG
Darren Maguire’s championship record is long. Before joining Riverdance in 1996, he had earned first place at many regional and National competitions, including the Great Britains, All England, All Ireland and the Regional Oireachtas; and a second place in the World Championships. Darren was born into a dancing family. His parents, Kathleen and Michael Maguire, founded the highly-regarded Maguire O’Shea Academy of Irish Dance just outside London, England nearly thirty-five years ago. Darren and his five siblings inherited the talent, all having won major dance titles. Most recently, his youngest sister, Ellie, taking first place at the World Championships three times.
Darren has performed on many of the world’s most notable stages, including Radio City Music Hall, The Kremlin and the Great Hall of the People. As an accredited ADCRG, Darren is certified to adjudicate Irish dance competitions under the rules of the Dublin, Ireland-based Irish Dancing Commission.
He relocated to Tucson, AZ, in the summer of 2006 and founded the Maguire Academy of Irish Dance after hanging up his Riverdance shoes, having danced with the world-renowned show for ten years. Darren actively teaches classes at all four schools.
President PHIL GUTT called the meeting to order right on time.
MARK BLAKEMAN gave the invocation. PAT DAVITT led us in a stirring rendition of “America The Beautiful” accompanied by GARY HIRSCH on the piano.
JO DECHATELET kindly used some of her allotted birthday time to introduce our guests and visiting Rotarians.
Happy Birthday to: Principal PAT LENNAN, who noted that some of his former students (DAVE GALLAHER, BILL ANASTOPOULOS, and MIKE DEVRIES) were in attendance for this special occasion (PAT also blessed us with a long and involved joke that left many of us shaking our heads); JO DECHATELET, who noted that she shares her birthday with her own sister; and BILL MOORE, who was stunned to recently learn that he was, in fact, not KEVIN WONG’s favorite mentee ever.
CHARLOTTE HARRIS introduced new member KIMBERLY ELY. Kimberly’s list of accomplishments made this mystery editor feel inadequate but she made up for it by asking for a permanent seat at the rowdy table.
A raffle was held, with many valuable prizes given away. We expect that PAT ZUMBUSCH will show up next week smelling of the perfume he won courtesy of CONRAD PLIMPTON.
HAL ADAMSON spent a few moments reminiscing on the history of our club and suggested that our four greatest accomplishments were; disallowing smoking during meetings, admitting women, the car show(thanks to JON WANG and ARNIE JACOBSON), and most importantly the addition of the Doubletree cookies.
TED KIRAKOFE introduced Greg Foster, managing member of FC Tucson, who spoke about all the events that have led up to Tucson becoming one of the top 25 soccer markets in the United States.
President PHIL adjourned the meeting just a couple minutes late.
From Representative Martha McSally to Dr. Richard Carmona; from the death penalty to bond initiatives; from open primaries to school board candidates - the Rotary Club of Tucson has put dozens of topics under the spotlight during 2015-16. While a few have pertained primarily to Rotarians only (e.g. our District Governor), most have been of interest or importance to most Tucson-area and statewide residents.
We stage these programs not only because our members are interested, but because we believe education and discussion of issues and opportunities will make our community a better place. Our lineup of presentations is part of our service.
For many years, the non-profit Tucson Trade Bureau was the organization that everyone looked to as a producer of forums, speeches, and educational presentations on any subject of general community importance. All topics were fair game, and the TTB took no sides. The weekly forums attracted hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of people.
Once the Trade Bureau was no more, the Rotary Club of Tucson remained as the sole non-partisan, non-profit operation of size that regularly brings vital issues to light. There are other major clubs and groups that occasionally put on worthwhile programs: political leaders; economic analyses; award recognitions; etc. But most of those are sponsored by organizations with a horse in the race. They lobby for one or the other side; they endorse; they attempt to persuade the listeners to support their preferences. Rotary not only takes no sides – it encourages debate and deliberation between the supporters of various alternatives.
You heard or will hear from and about the Border Patrol, the Bureau of Land Management, the Tucson Airport Authority, our new Sheriff, the status of water supplies in our state, and many more.
Our club’s service to the community is demonstrated by our attention to dozens of crucial issues each year. Be proud of the neutral role your club plays as a leader in education and awareness. No one does a better job.
Background: The club Board of Directors is proposing the addition of the President of our club’s Foundation to the RCOT Board as a non-voting member. The Club President is already a member of the Foundation Board. The Foundation Board is in favor of the change.
