DARK DAY: There will be no Rotary Club of Tucson lunch meeting on February 1, 2017 due to the Gem Show scheduled at the DoubleTree. Since this is a scheduled Dark Day, no make up is required.
Tabitha Yim will describe the four components of women’s gymnastics competition and show video examples. She will discuss her formative experiences with gymnastics as a student, competitor, and coach. Now in her second year as Head Coach at Arizona, she will share her vision for the future of this program, recap some of last year’s performances, and the outlook for the current season.
Biography
In 2015, Tabitha Yim initiated a new era in Women’s Gymnastics at the University of Arizona. In introducing our new Head Coach, Athletics Director Greg Byrne stated: “We believe her combination of experience, charisma and the ability to connect with student-athletes will give Arizona the opportunity to compete for championships at the highest level.”
Coach Yim, a native Californian and graduate of Stanford University, earned the most All-America honors (14) as a gymnast in that school’s history. She also competed in the 2001 World Championships as a member of the U.S. National Team, and in 2004 finished fourth in the U.S. Olympic Trials.
During her recent 5-year tenure as an assistant coach at Stanford she was instrumental in the NCAA successes of that program.
Beyond gymnastics, she earned her degree in Human Biology at Stanford in 2008 and worked as a teacher for 2 years in Massachusetts. She worked an additional year teaching 9th grade in the outstanding program, “Teach for America.”

The head table was rockin, rollin, and cryin with tears of joy for our 10th annual “Car Show” celebration. PRESIDENT ELLIE, STEVE PICKERING, BILL MOORE, JIM MURPHY, KANDIE VACTOR, JIM LUBINSKI, PAT ZUMBUSCH and of course, JERRY HARRIS graced this table on the stage.
Former President, HUGH THOMPSON gave the Inspiration and spoke about former member, Kelly Hanson. GARY HIRSCH played and LIZ BAKER sang “My Country Tis of Thee”.
We had a delicious pot roast and the conversation was lively for our fellowship lunch. ERNIE MINCHELLA introduced our many guests and visiting Rotarians. SAA FONDA INSLEY gave away our raffle prizes: Harlow Gardens, Sullivan’s Eatery, 1(800) Flowers, Super Cuts and a Classics Car Show ball cap.

Of course our program was about the “Car Show”. PRESIDENT ELLIE introduced BILL MOORE … leader of the Grants Committee and then BILL introduced STEVE PICKERING, our Car Show Chairman. STEVE thanked his wife and daughter, and all of the post chairs of the show, along with the SLT Team, Tactical Team, Classics Club Team, Food Court Team (record sales), Beverage Team (record sales), Sound – TOM STRASBURG, The Gregory School, and TONY PEDROZA – Grounds. Our Title Sponsor, “We Buy Houses.com” and MIKE and Susan ANDERSON, where would we be without your help? We love you and your family! MIKE also finds the Corvette, buys it and fixes it all at his cost – wow, what a man! Also, FAYE MORSE sponsored our silent auction, which also had record sales. Thank you RICHARD MUNDINGER and LES SILBERMAN for your hard work.
Finally, we had 480 volunteers, which included JTED students that worked over 380 hours. Thank you DAVE WHITE for your ticket sales - $151,000 (special events) and day of the show sales $15,000. The #1 salesman was JERRY HARRIS, 1,680 tickets and #2 DAVE WHITE at 1,200 tickets. Special Events accounted for 35% of our total sales. The #1 Team was LEN DITMANSON with 3,500 tickets.
$209,308 was the total NET, NET number. This is the amount of money that our club will give away today. This record amount – over $50,000 more than any previous show, is unbelievable!!!

PRESIDENT ELLIE got to give away 10% or $20,931 by using her discretionary fund. She will have a great time helping her causes with some of this extra cash from a truly remarkable car show. The winners thanked our club and the members for this award. They were extremely pleased and humbled.
Now it is time to pass the car show keys to our next chairman, but first, #9 Chair ROGER HARWELL presented a trophy to #10 STEVE PICKERING for all of his work. STEVE #10 passed the car keys chairmanship to former President JIM MURPHY #11. An old gas can, a heart, a (good luck charm) rain gauge, and a #11 T-shirt were STEVE’S gifts to JIM.
Our celebration meeting was closed by PRESIDENT ELLIE with a quote from JERRY HARRIS, “Never think that you’ve seen the last of something”. Great line JERRY!
Julie Paulson was born in Dallas, Texas, and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and Psychology from Wellesley College. She has also studied at Dartmouth College, and received her Master’s Degree in Marketing Research and Finance from Wharton College.
For over 20 years, Julie served in the management level in the Telecommunications and Healthcare Industries in such programs as:
in Ohio in cooperation with Ohio Medicaid and Ohio State University when she developed a program to serve patients who lived two or more hours from specialists in city centers, in Dubai where she launched a company with clients in Dubai and their partner companies in America; in the US where she created a new service for AT&T to establish direct marketing centers including such companies as 3M and Monsanto.
Prior to joining Waddell and Reed as a Financial Advisor this year, Julie was a Consultant where she did such activities as assist California clients with developing tools for analyzing reliable data centers and advised Texas clients regarding analyzing the difference in the cost between two fiber installation types along a pipeline.
Julie’s charitable community involvement has included: fundraising for the Arizona Opera League; organizing the initial Festival of Champions for the United States Equestrian Team as well as starting an Advanced Young Rider Program for the US Equestrian team.
Julie is married and has one adult daughter. Please say hello to Julie and introduce yourself if you haven’t yet had a chance to meet her.
Charlene "Char" Sigala - Char is one of our newest Family Members to join the Club. As a Baby Boomer, Charlene had a childhood full of adventure and high expectations for her future. Pursuing a college education at San Jose State University, she followed in her mother’s footsteps and became a teacher. Thanks to the guidance and encouragement of several mentors early in her career, Charlene completed the requirements for a Master’s in Educational Leadership. In 1984, employed by the Washoe County School District in Reno, Nevada, Charlene was selected as the Principal of Glen Duncan Elementary School. Over the next 19 years, she had the good fortune to lead four school communities as the District embraced progressive and cutting edge practices at all levels. In 2003, Charlene was promoted to Senior Director which required her to supervise thirteen elementary schools including the evaluation of those principals.
Completing her career in Washoe County in 2005, Charlene relocated to Arizona and continued to work as a school administrator in Glendale and Marana. Retiring from education in 2011, Charlene elected to remain in Tucson and explored other career options. In March of 2012, she became a licensed Realtor and joined Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage. Her desire to continue her passion for lifelong learning and serving others have been fully realized working in the real estate industry. Having more flexibility in her schedule has also allowed Charlene to pursue more opportunities to volunteer in the community. She plans to remain in Tucson and expand her business while being of service whenever possible. Please take the time to visit with our new Family member, Char, if you haven’t yet. You’ll be glad you did.
The official name of this activity is the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA). The RYLA project began in Australia in 1959, when young people throughout the state of Queensland were selected to meet with Princess Alexandra, the young cousin of Queen Elizabeth II. The Rotarians of Brisbane, who hosted the participants, were impressed with the quality of the young people and decided to bring youth leaders together each year for a week of social, cultural and educational activities.
In an informal atmosphere, groups of outstanding young people ages 14 to 30 spend several days in a challenging program of leadership training, discussions, inspirational addresses and social activities designed to enhance personal development, leadership skills and good citizenship.
Each year, thousands of young people are selected to attend Rotary-sponsored leadership camps or seminars held in districts throughout the world. Rotary Club of Tucson’s Interact Club had 5 of our kids attend RYLA at Camp Pine Rock in Prescott, Arizona, over the three-day Martin Luther King holiday. There were 100 kids in total who participated. Everyone came back safe and sound and had a marvelous time!
