Here’s what you need to know from the RI International Convention in Sao Paulo. Rotary continues its member-focused approach to making membership beneficial to Rotarians as well as to the audiences we serve. How will the Rotary Global Rewards program make your membership more valuable? What is the latest on the efforts to eradicate Polio? What is the best take-away from one’s first RI Convention?
We had another very interesting meeting, though I did notice there were a few empty tables this week, I’m guessing from extended time away due to the recent Holiday. I certainly hope and trust everyone had an enjoyable and safe 4th of July weekend!
Mr. ZUMBUSCH opened the meeting with a few fine words, followed by MEL YORK leading us in the pledge and song while accompanied by GARY HIRSCH on piano.
YVONNE ERVIN introduced us to a “long list of guests”, introduced the first guest, thanked us with a smile and walked back to her seat. Yes, I too took a moment before realizing she was pulling our collective leg. Only one guest at Rotary this week, clearly we must be in the midst of summer in Tucson!
We had four Paul Harris presentations this week. This included three first-time recipients, PETER, CHRIS and DAVE. We also had a two-time recipient, LOU RIGGS. You’ll note first-time recipients only get their first names listed, this should give them a little added incentive to start working toward that next Paul Harris. Congratulations to all you fine gentlemen and thanks for your generosity!
For our main program, ARNIE JACOBSEN introduced CLINT MABIE, who spent some time reviewing a new and interesting website with us. This site, MAP (mapAZDASHBOARD.COM) displays much information regarding Tucson, the Southwest Region, and 10 other large cities within the region. It is a great site to review so we can see how Tucson compares to other cities in the region. Very interesting!
And lastly, we had four Birthday recipients this week. They are Keith Wiegand, Ed Cole, Dave White and Diana Cannon, who just joined the club three months ago. Happy Birthday to all of you!
In closing, have a GREAT WEEK and for those Rotarians who are traveling, BE SAFE!
Ever find out some new characteristic, talent or skill about someone you think you know thoroughly? Despite years of acquaintance, you only recently discover someone she is related to, something she can do, some specialized knowledge she possesses? Sure you have. In all likelihood, you subsequently come upon a situation where that person was able to help you due to having that quality.
Remembering that we have 233 members in our club, imagine the hidden talents and knowledge lying below the surface, undiscovered up until now. What do you want to bet that some member of our club: Speaks Mandarin? Has access to a front-end loader? Plays the trombone? Is an arena football fan? Used to live in Denmark? Is related to, or is friends with, a top level US government administrator? Collects dolls? Has been President of a national association? Knows how to write computer code? Plays racquetball?
A member joins Rotary and we know what classification is assigned. Those at the introduction meeting hear a bit about their past, their family and perhaps their hobbies. You glean a bit more via conversation at lunch or while selling car show tickets. Yet, there is so much more that we could know, but don’t, because the occasion to make the discovery never takes place.
What if we asked new (as well as existing) members to give us a list of contacts, talents, skills, and traits that they are willing to offer should the club ever have a need? RCOT enters the keywords/phrases into our club database and we do a search when that need arises. Imagine how much more capable our club would be than even the exceptional level it is today.
If you have something, or if you know something, or if you can connect to something that could help the Rotary Club of Tucson have an even greater impact, drop an email to club Secretary Jeff Heath, jheath9990@aol.com.
Share what you are willing to share. Give what you can. Work with your fellow Rotarians to make our world a better place.
